Never played HG/SS
Played Crystal.
Really want to play it again. Should I replay crystal or try hg/ss? AFAIK, HG/SS ost is absolute garbage compared to the original. Is it just resprites? Anything new?

HG/SS is amazing, and is worlds above the original games. I have no issues with the OST either, I think the tracks are done justice. If you don't like that though, the game does have the original ost in it as well.

Doing a playthrough right now, actually. Having a blast with it. Definitely go with the remakes.

If you've never played the remakes, I highly recommend them. With everything gen IV had to offer in terms of raw mechanics as well as some really good additions here >>34311401, HG/SS probably are the best games in the series. There's a reason why /vp/ sucks their dicks so much (the games, not the anons).

HGSS fucked up almost every area artistically and stylistically. Not to mention that the soundtrack sounds like ass. It's a shame, considering that DPPt have possibly the best soundtrack of any Pokémon game and altogether look amazing. In my view, virtually every town and route in HGSS look bland and boring in comparison to Sinnoh and GSC.

Crystal has a lot of charm and if the recent GS VC release taught me anything, it's that Gen 2 holds up surprisingly well even now. And since Crystal is just a slightly better version of GS it's probably still one of the best Pokemon games in terms of objective quality.

That being said there's a lot to like about HGSS, they aren't JUST remakes. Honestly you should play both, if you don't think it would bore you.

Yea, I just don't see what you mean, man. Everything looks exactly as it should. In fact, the remakes stressed the Kansai influence in the design even more than the originals did. The soundtrack sounds great as well, with the exception of maybe a few tracks. I can't imagine how you think the gameboy color's archaic visual and audio diarrhea perform at all better than gen 4 did. I think your goggles are just on too tight there, pal.

Here you go. Ilex Forest is a good example of what I'm trying to get across. Look at the only one kind of tree in HGSS, and the lack of darkness. It makes up a little by having the specks of light through the canopy, but it's not the same.

I think the DS era games all look unique. The grass was more lush in this game, the fall colours in Ecruteak, the lamps in Violet City at night invoking its Japanese influence, etc.

There are small flourishes about HGSS that really add up. This and BW2 are as good as the games have ever looked, to be honest.

Sinnoh is great for the region design and how you can feel Coronet looming everywhere, but not for the aesthetics of the color palette, sprites, etc.

GSC has the best night color palette in the entire series, and arguably the best sprites as well.

I heard that Crystal has a slightly different color palette than Gold & Silver. Is that true?

The distortions caused by the panning of the camera can be really bad and especially because of the resolution, but then I remember the normal overworld stuff and it just all feels unique. Game Freak started using tiles that felt more organic here, and you could see it in the rock formations or edges of land. Virbank, Humilau, Aspertia, Nacrene, Village Bridge, Lacunosa are simple but because of the tileset they were using felt unique and interesting. Train tracks in Nacrene and the random train town in BW come to mind as they looked great, but in past gens they would look like they're stuck to a grid (because they are).

Even some of the camera work that they did in BW2 game it an endearing look that still felt distinctly like the Pokémon, unlike the generic 3D look we have today.

Stuff like the view out to the mountains in Aspertia and the Marine Tube are really well done, but the look of it isn't ruined when it returns to the normal overworld look.

Like look at this. It looks like a beautiful 2D game with intricate spritework. The land formations don't look rigid like past gens either.

The move to 3D just sapped any personality that the games had, and they were building it with Gen 3 and Gen 4.

I really like that Poke Ball floating on top of the tall grass. As well as the floating pixels scattered about due to bad sprite scaling.

HG/SS ost is NOT absolute garbage. the games are 10/10 just like gen 2.
HG/SS are, OBJECTIVELY, 2 of the best pokemon games ever made. miles better than gen 5.

They're good. Definately play them. Slugma, Houndoor and Misdreavus are available earlier thanks to the Safari park. I don't know if you're playing on emulator or a ds, but if it's the later, the pokewalker sold with the game is quite entertaining.

The biggest bummer for me, that made me dislike the game a bit though, is Team Rocket. They're really boring to fight. You barely get any experience point since they mostly use Rattata teams until the end.
I don't know why it affected me so much, but I can't play these games again because of this.

Besides this, everything else is enjoyable !
