because storing it in the cloud is the whole point, to keep your mons safe in case you lose your game or 3ds or something

the real question is why does it cost money
a pokemon file is literally a kilobyte, you could store the entirety of bank on a single server
uncompressed save files are a megabyte and if you multiplied that by SM's sales, you'd only get around 16 terabytes
it's a fucking scam

They already get paid enough from game sales, merchandise sales, and the fact that Pokemon is the world's biggest media franchise. There is no reason for Pokebank to cost money considering that it costs them basically nothing to mantain.
