It's an actual feature in USUM that the totems all have new pre-battle cries that have nothing to do with their names. The US translation is the only version I know of that actually translated that oddity rather than just using the original SM cries.

For comparison, here's his original dialog in SM. In this one, he's actually saying part of his name, so Kommomooh is a decent translation. In USUM, he vocally says an onemonapia for a loud noise. Like, he's not making the loud noise, he's just saying the word for it. Yelling "sound!" is actually a decent translation.

Kommo-o is a sound-themed pokemon. Pokemon say stuff that isnt there names reguarly in games. I think it was on purpose.

I'm not an expert of English onomatopoeias, but wouldn't something like 'clang' have made more sense? 'Sound' is neither an onomatopoeia nor onomatopoeic, it's just a word.

I can settle this. The Japanese word being translated isn't actually a sound effect, although it sounds a LOT like one. He's actually just screaming "bouon", which is the Japanese word for "Soundproof". The localizers probably just thought it would be hard to make the full word into a roaring noise, so they just shortened it to "sound".
