In-game it is said that Vast Poni Canyon was where the Island Trials began, but they never told why or how, just that.

Actually come to think of it, considering the Vast Poni Canyon Trial is right at the base of the Altar of the Moone/Sunne perhaps that Trial was originally there for religious rites of passage as well as protection of such a sacred land.
