To be fair there's a fuckton of moments/lines in SM/USUM that feel like its constantly jerk off Kanto's dick, just so many references and nods. Lillie/Gladion going to Kanto, the Kantonian Gym, Ryuki who seems to come from Kanto, the Team Rocket bridge (Hell Rainbow Rocket in general), and the list goes on. Either they're strongly hinting at some sort of Kanto "reimagining," or they're just marketing to nostalgia.
Ryuki seems like the most out of place example here. He comes out of nowhere, pops up in the Kantonian Gym and says its nothing like the gyms back home, constantly hints that he's an established character with that "I'm what you would call a star" shit, etc.. It's very clear that he wasn't made for SM at all.
