Yes it isn’t the best choice competitively, however, it lives up to its name when catching Ultra Beasts. No need to mindlessly shit on Silvally for your incompetence.

No it wasn't. Type:Full aka Silvally DID exist previously according to the logs. The masks were added later as a restraining mechanism right before they decided to put the failed experiment on ice. Gladion didn't unlock some potential no one knew about, he just reverted it to it's original state, which was still deemed a failure in the data logs.

The "missing" potential was a bond with its Trainer, which is what both Gladion and the Player succeed in doing with their Nulls, but thanks to GameFreak being good writers, we literally never see this bond be put to the test against UBs or other notable opponents in Cutscene Form since Silvally is pretty garbage going by game mechanics.

They just changed it's name from Type:Full to Type:Null when they decided the experiment was a failure. The mask was added after the fact. Silvally is it's 'original' form and was still considered unsuccessful.
