It's supposed to be like it's made of glass. We have plenty of living mineral and metal pokemon already, so it's not that far fetched compared to the likes of Gigalith. It just secretes an addictive neurotoxin, or might be entirely composed of it.

I think they're plants because it's a neat idea. A plant that can cut down all competitors for light would be an amazing adaptation and a great invasive species. Kartana could be mobile seedlings that clear areas for mono-stands of plants. It'd also explain why it'd attack tall objects mistaking them for competitors or just because they block light.

Speaking of UBs, I've got a Q

Is it easier to find shiny UBs through the ultra wormhole gimmick? I've been soft resetting for UBs lately, and I've caught a shiny Buzzwole and a shiny Kartana both in around or under 200 encounters. Am I just exceptionally lucky, or does this experience generalize?

it happened to me too, I got a buzzwole at around 150 and a nihilego at around 50
but it's since taken 1200 for a xurkitree and 920 (ongoing) for a kartana, so it's hard to say for certain

Shinyness is determined upon battle for UBs and upon entry for normal pokemon.
So you better have a Synchronizer and get that coin flip.
However, you can see the UBs shinyness during its animation in battle before its aura flares, so you can soft reset pretty fast.
