So does /vp/ prefer Trials or Gyms? Totems or Gym Leaders? Why?

Totems are better than gym leaders because they don't need to follow the same rules you do which makes it more challenging.

The trials themselves are a toss up. I liked the new electric trial puzzle but most of them are pretty worthless

I like trials way more than gyms. With a gym you can always exit to go heal at a Pokemon center and the continue where you left off whereas with a trial you're locked in to do whole thing or start over from scratch. Unless you use a self imposed rule, trials are more challenging. As for leaders or totems, I'd say totems since those can also be more challenging than leaders too.

Honestly i would have both. Have the gym leader give you a test before they deem you worthy of challenging the gym to get a badge,or have the gym leader use a totem pokemon in battle.

Totems are definitely more challenging than gym leaders in that

>they can team up with another pokemon
>they have actual strategies based on synergy and move combination
Trials are kinda boring in the sense that there's little to do but at least their layout aren't as predictable as gyms

Make the gym leader's ace the totem pokemon and his others the back up, its not like you go through more than 3 of the totem's backup anyways

Gyms would actually breath a little bit of life into their respective Towns, wheras all the Towns in Alola are forgettable as fuck. And Gyms actually allow for some unique puzzles compared to all the uninspired "Trials".
I like both Totems and Gym Leaders, but at the end of the day I get a better sense of progression beating Gym Leaders than Totems.

First, Gyms were an overused mechanic in which you must reach to the end of a place, while in Trials you must do different tasks.

Totem Battles are just a stepback from Gym Leader Battles because the Totem is only one Pokémon with stat boosts that summons support Pokémon and most of the Totems aren't that challenging unlike Gym Leaders pre-Gen 5
