"Pokemon is a collection of games that when looked at objectively or in the context of other games and especially other RPGs are actually pretty fucking shitty, and it's fans will applaud it's developers for adding features that are ten years overdue that any other series would be dead in the water for omitting in their first entry, that excels despite it's quality because of a god tier concept no one else has managed to do better".

It did. The battle system and qol is far behind newer games, but minimal story and branching off gym routes is the most ideal direction for Pokemon that future games should've improved on, rather than endless cutscenes.

This. but, alas. Pokémon is one of those series where objectivity doesn't matter. People love the monsters in any form. Why else would crappie like Pokémon Go get so popular? As is, the games are "good enough" because they're playable and they add new monsters. but it's a sad state of affairs when the first game in the series, released on piece of shit hardware, does some things better than a bloated RPG released in 2017. Plain sad, man.
