Does anyone else feel like Alola was bland or forgettable as a region, especially the towns?

Even for games that I wasn't thrilled by like XY, I remember most of the towns. Anistar, Snowbelle, and Lumiose all felt distinct and memorable to, but I honestly can't even really picture any of the Alolan towns

SM and USUM have some of the lowest populations in the series, not to mention Alola having the fewest municipalities of all regions sans maybe the Sevii Islands. Hardly any enterable buildings compared to home games, and generic NPC houses are scarce.

Yeah, and I REALLY felt that lack of populace and houses. I guess I was spoiled by BW and XY since I really enjoy the more crowded regions

I can't help but think a lot of it was laziness on GF's part

I liked Po Town and Seafolk Village, but the rest were pretty forgettable. They really should have given some of the areas more character than just being pokefied Hawaii.
I agree the first two parts of Kalos' towns had great charisma, but I tend to mix up the later ones, the whole Dendemille-Anistar-Couriway stretch in particular.

Boring answer but my favorite is probably either Ecruteak or Sootopolis.

Because the many interviews we've had over the last three years have basically confirmed it. They put their absolute hearts into Gen V, a little less in Gen VI, and fucktons less in Gen VII. These three year gen gaps can't help at all given how much 3D they need to work with now.

Alola is soulless. With so few optional landmarks, small-ass dungeons and tiny towns, it's a depressing waste of great potential.

No. Perhaps it's because tropical places have a special place in my heart, considering that I have relatives from the islands. I may live in the city, but XY didn't leave a huge impression on me, with the exception of Lumoise city and that one snowy town.
My favorite area will always be Snowpoint City. Winter is the best season and seeing snow makes me happy.

I noticed this too during my time with S/M. It makes sense since you shouldn't be able to enter any house you choose at any time, but it really gave the idea in past games that you weren't really on earth. That the people are a bit nicer and a bit more trusting. There's still negative things that happen, obviously, but the Pokemon world itself seemed a happier place.

Personally I feel like the lack of gyms made the towns less memorable. I do really like the design of the region as a whole though, especially Mele Mele

Ironically, all of those interactions/sidequests with NPCs, details such as water audio and stuff like interactable Pokemon were to make Alola feel alive. The theme of Alola is literally life

Gamefreak put all that effort into BW and BW2 only to get snubbed by long time fans.
This may have killed their morale and led them to decide it wasn't worth putting the same amount of effort when producing future games.
This also explains why the newer games have a ton of Gen 1 pandering.

X/Y has the most forgettable locations in the series by a mile. It has one memorable city, and it's only remembered for how bad it is.
Not that Alola is great though, Po Town, Aether Paradise, and Seafolk Village are the only memorable large areas. But at least it has more specific locations like the alters and ultra spaces. Kalos doesn't even have that much.

I put a massive amount of time into all the games, so nothing is really forgettable to me, but SM is the one I have put the least amount of time into.
It is the least alive feeling to me, so I don't play it, and I don't remember anything from it because of that.

The most memorable thing about the Alolan locations is the music, particularly how each city/town had its own unique track, plus night themes. One of the few things GF actually put effort into these days.

Alola is alright with how fleshed out the setting is, but the environment itself is garbage. I blame a mix of steadily changing design philosophies over the years, modelling for the overworld itself being outsourced unlike XY and prior, and engine problems with their attempts to go for proper proportions in the overworld.

XY has some o my favourite cities aswell, it is probably the most underrated region but thats probably due to having only one set of games

Alola has some good ideas (Po, Paniola, KoniKoni) but really poor execution since most buildings are either closed or just repeated shops (clothes, haircut, malasadas)

Honestly, if they want to complain about a lack of Pokemon, people should be complaining that SM had the lowest ingame amount since Emerald.

This made me so fucking upset.
The cheery theme of the Hikers in D/P, the fucking cool theme of R/S Cool Trainers, and the creepy theme of the Scientists in B/W were taken out for a model that is present in battle and rapes the frame rate and ruins immersion with the Pokemon sizes.

Alola felt flush with life to me, especially in USUM where you can see pokemon roaming. It feels, rightfully so, like the region belongs more to the pokemon than it does to the humans that discovered the islands long ago. The tapus are solid evidence for this; its implied they can easily kick the peoples' shit in on a whim.

If there were more landmarks or bigger ones, it definitely would have helped that feeling. Brooklet Hill's rockpools were something I was so, SO excited to explore when I saw it on Alola's map in SM's prerelease period, and utterly disappointed when they and the cave were inaccessible in both Gen VI games. They even removed them from the ingame map (not that it even works in Brooklet Hill anyway).

Vast Poni Canyon is the only landmark that feels like a real dungeon.

It's a region where the main appeal comes from aesthetic. Almost every location in this game has some form of concept art, do you think the Pokemon Centre from Diamond and Pearl had concept art?

If you're the type who just views things technically, then 90% of Alola's supposed appeal is basically gone.

I'm honestly convinced that because of 3D, GF now has this mindset that appearance is more important than gameplay, as it's more presentable. And with Switch being the first opportunity to use HD, I'm not too confident

Ula'ula also felt pretty bleak and hostile in a way I enjoyed and I really liked what they did with Mt Lanakila in USUM. Most of the routes weren't bad either.

Towns were pretty bad though. I only like Malie City and Po Town. It's time for a less tropical region though. We need an actual cold region. Sinnoh doesn't count when there's no more cold areas than there are in Kalos.

Both Kalos and Alola had some fun and creative areas but weren't consistently amazing. Unova was linear but had loads going on in towns and routes.

Melemele to me seems like a shining example of a first level in games. Tons of pokemon to see and catch, plenty of side quests, and just enough stuff off to the side to go and explore if you feel like it. It's just fun. Unfortunately I think the other islands don't quite live up to it, but they're all still good in their own ways.
