i went out of my way to catch this fucking shellder in kala'e bay on melemele after getting surf and before getting fly from akala for a 5% encounter rate while fishing, searching for a good nature and skill link

absolutely worth it though, solos the whole fucking ultra moon with ohko icicle spear + ice shard + razor shell, tanks all physical damage, outspeeds over half the trainers

first time using cloyster was such a good choice

Based on the comments, I think he meant in storymode. Staryu is often only obtainable after you get surf so usually you already have a water mon in your party and most people don't like having several same type mons in their party.

If it makes you feel better, it struggles to ohko anything, as psychic types typically get good special defense to set up screens, and ghosts are either bulkier or faster than it. It also gets ohkoed pretty easily thanks to that shit HP.

I still like the ghost witch, but Gengar and Mimikyu are much better. Even Drifblim helped me out of some nasty situations thanks to that thicc HP stat.

I went into UM planning on using one (Traded an egg over due to the location swap) and ended up sticking to Eviolite Misdreavus. Had its moments throughout the game but overall it fell off

This big motherfucker. I love how comically large he is, and he learns Water Spout, which is amazing. His stats aren't too bad either, but somehow, every time I've had the chance to use one, I've passed it up. Same actually goes for Zangoose, Cacturne, Armaldo, and Cradily.

Used one in Fire Red. I was good at taking things, and mine was special and it still put in work. But good lord was it a chore to level up. Other than that, it was a pretty solid choice for a Water type.

Used one in Platinum ohko'd Cynthia's Garchomp with Ice Punch. It was pretty easy to level up, and outsped almlost everything in the game. But in my opinion it makes the game too easy as the same time. Which is problem with some other mons too.

I always chose the water starter, so I was planning to get a different one in my USUM playthrough and then get a Starmie, but then I got Squirtle via Island Scanner.

Probably one of my biggest guilty pleasure mon, never really knew why I liked it, nor why I never could forget about it. It just exists. I'm happy do that they decided to buff it so it's stats don't quite entirely reflect what's supposed to look like. A movepool upgrade would've been nice to.

Scizor (Scyther is rare, needs trade evolution to get)
Hippowdon (rare outside DPPT)
Darmanitan (rare outside BW&2)
Any of the Nidos (usually I prefer other poison types)
Florges (It's not very impressive statwise and needs a shiny stone to evolve)

I used one in AS and it was great. Early on he was saving my ass so many times, being immune to moves. Though later on his stats started to show and I had to use him less. Was fun, I never had one back in the ruby days, good little guy.

you get less exp if youre a certain amount of levels above the wild pokemon. i thought for a while you get less exp if you have a type advantage too, but i havent confirmed it

Actually, it's a formula. You get the base experience x the level of the pokemon x factor depending on the ratio (difference?) of your level to the opponent's level. You get less experience if you're overleveled but you also get more experience if you're underleveled. It was a nice idea but shit for the earlygame, especially with the bright idea they got of making the first gym strong against your starter regardless

That flies the first few times but after it gets old. In my most recent play through I grinder Snivy until it learned Growth (level 15) and set up on Lillypup. The first gym’s AI is fucking retarded and uses Work Up until it’s maxed out or you attack

It's funny that I actually autismed through the formula and I found out that the point at which the new system is better is if you're fighting a mon at least 3/4 of your level. There's no mons in USUM that are lvl 75 that you could fluently grind on.
The system makes it way easier to fill out dex and level comp mons but makes it harder for hyper training
