I agree. Pokémon was made to connect with others. That's why we get stuff like Festival Plaza, Join Avenue, wifi and wireless communication, lots of tournaments...

It's all about being part of a community and one-on-one interactions, not the whole open world experience or exploration as many say.

Communication and teamwork is the reason why most of Nintendo's major franchises were made. It's not Nintendo's fault though that the first gamers were socially isolated nerds and that the beginning of gaming communities online instead of offline ruined what they were going for.

Secondly, Pokemon got huge because of the local coop. The exploration elements are integral to the single player experience, otherwise Pokemon could be reduced to a catching and battling simulator with no overworld gameplay.

In fact these are the excuse for the actual goal of Pokémon. So yes, Pokémon can actually be reduced to all of that, but they know it wouldn't sell as well.

Pokémon Colosseum and XD are the proof of this, despite them not being developed by GF.

Your argument is more directed at people that want the games to be story-focused. Not people that want less story, as in open world.

The regions of the past games actually were designed with more exploration in mind than the newer regions, probably because they don't want newer players to get confused/frustrated like they did with Sinnoh.

Ironically for the second reason, Red and Green only had multiplayer battle due to the requests of Nintendo. And it's pretty funny you claim Pokemon isn't a time sink while saying the connectivity aspect is all that matters, when that very aspect is what makes it a time sink.

Open world fans think Pokemon games are supposed to 75-100 jour time sinks where you explore empty areas. That's not what Pokemon ever was. I understand wanting to change formula but changing the whole reason Pokemon was created in first place makes little sense

Even if you didn't know about the internal mechanisms of stats, it's a pretty big time sink to simply grind up Pokemon to be on par and get all the moves you want on them, especially prior to Gen V when there were no flat rules yet.

I have literally never heard anyone say that. The older games were significantly shorter. Or are you confusing post-game fags with open world fags?

I also think you're misreading the interview. He just says that the public internet didn't really exist back then in the same form. He says that the local play was their best option, not that other forms of communication is against pokémon's core idea.
