Trying to build my first living dex: what should I breed as currency for GTS trades?

Are any mons actually rare ingame or should I just breed starters and pseudos?

Moon Ball Vulpix used to work for me in SM.

Else, keep a box handy with desirable version exclusives. I also have a box full of every single starter which I can breed in a minute for the GTS. They work great.

I filled my SM Dex with friend ball petilils but I don't know how effective that would be anymore, and I haven't tried for nat dex if you're going for that

Haunters, phantumps, and any other trade evolutions can get you most any basic pokemon.

I've had luck getting legendaries with the trade evolutions that require items, such as magmar or porygon holding their respective items. For those you have to have the BP, though.

If you have free time, farm Metal Coats while watching TV or something. Scizor is, by far, the most requested non-legendary in the GTS.

Anything in an apricorn ball has extreme power on the GTS. I've gotten multiples of the new UBs from Level Ball Larvestas.

I filled out my living dex using only haunters, and not even particularly nice ones. Any desirable trade evolving pokemon should work fine for most pokemon.
