Happiness is stored per trainer. If you put it in Bank or trade it to another game, the Happiness will be reset for the new trainer owning it. But if you send it back to the OT, the Happiness it had with that person is still there.

There's no difference between that and the PC. This is especially annoying when you have something like a Lopunny or Salamence at level 100 with retribution
