Have GF ever revealed any of their design rules for Pokemon that make it so no fakemon ever looks legitimate? All I know of is Sugamori wanting to break their rule about not turning a tiny real life creature into a giant Pokemon is what lead Turner to make Buzzwole.

A lot better, but again, the eyes, the only dog/cat pokemon I can think of with such easily definable pupil/iris/sclera are Purrloin and Poochyena
Most pokemon have their pupil and iris mixing together

Toucannon has that feel.

It breaks the rules (lots of colors on the beak, complex eyes, but its relative closeness to the animal it's based on gives it that old school feel.

Funny that you're posting gen VII starters. Because they're way different than previous Pokémon, due to not being drawn by Sugimori.
Especially Litten, put it next to the other Fire starters and see how much it stands out, mainly due to the coloring style.

As has already been said before in this thread, it's very much down to facial identities and most often the eyes. As seen here >>34392639 it's easy to recognise a lot of Pokemon from their eyes alone, even when they're just copy-pasted onto different faces. One thing I've noticed with almost all fakemon is either trying too hard to make a head stick out with abnormailities or drawing a general face shape and not giving enough consideration into how that face will emote in different perspectives or expressions. The design will adapt to the face instead of the face reacting to the design's structure.
Ballio with its trademark sinister grin and rather simple but unique eyes, both of which feel consistent in the many ways it has been drawn, is an example of a fakemon getting it right and it shows in just how popular that one managed to be.

if you go full moe-eyes, highlights are always inside pupil and not halfway in, makes the eyes too lustrous compared to >>34392639.
Since people compare them to official arts, the line thickness feels different and messes with size scale somewhat, plus the shading, poses etc.etc.

It's somehow really hard to grasp into concrete guidelines.

Heracross isn't that big, and a Hercules beetle isn't that small. Additionally, Buzzwole is much more mosquito-like than Heracross is herecules beetle-like.
Heracross itself is a rather loose interpretation of a herecules beetle in general, compared even to other more "cartoonish" pokemon, like Growlithe/Houndour, Meowth, or Krabby. Heracross is really more of a beetle-man than a straight-beetle. Just look at Pinsir. Nobody likes Pinsir. At least nowhere near as much as Heracross.

Pokemon, even when they were sprites the designs were as a 360° thing. It had to be a believeable, almost palpable beign. How the pokemon would not only look but animate from all angles. Some pokemon have very simplistic designs but they work when you see them move and do something you didn't expect.

This is what the vast majority of fakemon get wrong. >>34392573 >>34396802 >>34396684 They add too much decoration to try to set them apart from a regular cartoon of an animal or object with no consideration of all angles or movements and other quirks. Bunch of busy, unfunctional designs.

This is also what sets apart Pokemon from other monster collecting media. Most don't seem to consider making a clean and functional design and just throw stuff that looks cool at it.

To be fair there's some Alola Mons that are guilty of the this.

Decidueye comes to mind. Not saying its a bad design but there's so much laziness in other aspects of the design that many Fakemon are guilty of.

These people wouldn't know a good Pokemon/Fakemon design if it hit them over the head. The designs just don't match their sensibilities of what they think a Pokemon should look like. Honestly your designs are fine. They're a lot more in line with what the series has going on than most. Don't take their criticism to heart.

It's the one thing they should never reveal, that's for sure. Apparently, the people who design Pokemon aren't allowed to look at ANY fan creations even remotely Pokemon-related, which would play a big role in that part; absolutely every Pokemon is 100% unique in that regard, which is pretty incredible, especially with the internet driving the whole universe nowadays

The only rule I know they've said is the silhouette test, where a Pokémon should be identifiable by its silhouette.

There are plenty of garbage Pokemon designs and designs that don't fit the aesthetic of the generation. Heck, every time starter final evos have been leaked we saw swarms of people calling them fake because they looked dumb. Game Freak has standards for quality but the only guaranteed way to separate realmon from fakemon is whether they're in the games.

I feel something fakemons (especially starter fakemons) tend to get "wrong" is that they're usually not nuanced beyond animal + element/concept, and they tend to shove said element in your face. Like fake Fire starters are covered in flames, even though the original Fire starter just has a little flame on its tail.

Also, fake objectmons tend to feel like parodies or obligations and disingenuous.
