I don't understand why people keep saying this. It happens with Sonic too which also works best with a serious tone.

"Cartoony" art with serious story is the way to go. It's the best. If Pokémon was serious but had a realistic, gritty artstyle I wouldn't like it.

Serious Pokemon doesn't work because at the end of the day all conflicts are solved by letting each other's pets do the fighting for you. Pokemon will never attack trainers. Trainers will never severely hurt Pokemon. There's no real stakes because even if Maxie and Archie are competing for world's dumbest human, as an audience we know their plan to bring the apocalypse will fail. It HAS to fail because Pokemon isn't the type of series to destroy its own world.

If someone was to do a Pokemon series the best bet would be a middle ground like Avatar TLA where it's still a goofy show but with serious moments.

He's never going to change the world in a significant way because the world itself doesn't have a stable character, it changes every game.

Same deal with Pokemon. If Groudon actually did devastate the world then that means that Sootopolis, Lilycove, and Mossdeep Cities would be irrevocably fucked and the people would have to adapt to losing a quarter of their entire region. Not even counting the idea of their ocean disappearing and land that wasn't there before now being there. Pokemon populations would also be fucked up and if we're selling the "serious" tone then that means that some Pokemon would be rendered uncatchable because their habitats would be destroyed. Which is fucking terrible in a Pokemon game. Pokemon is not the type of series that breaks status quo at least with its narrative. It's a silly adventure about a 10 year old fighting ecoterrorists and monsters.

Sonic Adventure 2's story is literally just "please save my earth" with animals so I don't see how that's bad. It was before Shadow became an edgy marketing gimmick and most of the silly lines that people laugh at aren't present in the original Japanese version.

Sonic Adventure 2 actually has a pretty incredible plot for a game about a hedgehog that runs fast. It has a pretty emotional core that kinda creates a foundation for the one liners and cock rock attitude that sonic is known for. Sonic works with a serious tone but only if balanced with a light tone and as long as it doesn't mistake serious with edgy. Even then, the best Sonic content in past several years wasn't Sonic Forces but the Sonic Boom cartoon, a show that is entirely light-hearted and comedy focused. I agree that the Pokemon anime could be a tad bit more serious at times but to want something like Generations for a full series is ridiculous and Origins was laughable due to how poorly the tone of the episodes were.

I always recommend that people play at least 1 and 2 on proud/critical level 1. You’ll really come to appreciate how refined they are, especially for their age.

lets also not forget just about everyones favorite gen here is gen 3, if not gen 5. which adds to both sides of the argument here. gen 3 is a bit silly and goes over the top as one would expect of a children's video game, and it's great! then you have gen 5 which took a much more serious tone, and it was also great! and then there's gen 2 which was fully light-hearted and was more for fun and being adventurous, which kinda contrasts to gen 4's so over the top plot and takes itself completely seriously. my point is, pokemon works best as a mix of both and you can't really go wrong with either

I agree with your mania/forces comparison, but Sonic as a character has been trash since Roger Craig Smith took his voice. Fuck, can’t stand him, no matter how good colors and generations were. The man just doesn’t nail that sonic attitude, which in turn completely ruins any chance of us getting something like Adventure 2, or even unleashed again.

I masochistically love seeing cognitive dissonance in action on here. The inner struggle between adults and their inner child. The adult wants maturity in the franchise so that he/she doesn't feel so torn about being a fan of kids game that he/she technically "should've" grown out of years ago. I want "maturity" in the franchise so I can feel engrossed and enthralled in the content it provides. Only by being serious can that happen, it is literally impossible to feel any kind of investment in comedy.

Aw, my favorite gen is gen-4, followed by gen-1. I love gen-1's old school anime look and Sugimori's old art style, that shit is great. The weird off-model sprites are oddly charming (Golbat's gen1 sprite with the tongue out is one of my favorite sprites of all) and I rather like the minimalist plot, asshole rival, and darker tone (actual robberies committed, Marowak outright killed, Channeler in Lavender town going "Give me your blood!", etc.) 4's games played the best, though, Platinum and Soul Silver are still fun to replay after all these years.
