Is Platinum still worth playing? I skipped it back when it came out because I already had Pearl, but I kind of want to go back and see what I missed out on.

Eh, not really. I love it but the Frontier with the gen 4 mechanics was the selling point for me. No one's gonna raise competitive shit in an old game at this point in time. Only way it's worth it is if you get a hankering for Sinnoh and don't want to wait for the remakes.
