This is how you'll find the answers, and the answers are, simply, as follows:

The best games (like BW, BW2, HGSS, etc) followed completely basic game design (or even basic narrative) principles: fleshing out the world, actual content, tangible suspension of disbelief, and with BW and BW2 even pushed into ideas like making the media in question present an idea or ask questions.
To answer why a Pokémon game is good or bad is to ask why a game is good or bad is to ask why a piece of media is good or bad. If you know film theory or any other equivalent you can apply that knowledge generally to the medium. I think anyone reading this and applying his or her (or your) existent knowledge would be better than a long-winded post whining on about the specifics.
