The movies did well enough until XY, where they started flopping hard.

Then they did an AU movie to celebrate the anime's 20th anniversary, and that was a success.

Who knows. People got tired of the formula? The first XY movie was absolute shit. The second one promised a clash of legendaries which it did but the movie was garbage. By the time the volcanion movie came out nobody gave a fuck anymore. Also yokai watch I guess.
