To be honest, the worst thing to happen to Pokemon as far as game design goes in my opinion was the transition from Gens 1 and 2 to Gen 3. Gen 1 was a game where you were just a person in a plausible world that happened to have interesting creatures in it. Gen 2 was a direct sequel that expanded the world, and added more "newly-discovered" monsters. Gen 3 was the start of shit like segmenting the Pokemon world into regions with regional Pokemon, regional villains, regional legendaries (that are basically gods now) with mystical-magical plotlines concerning the evil team that now gets rehashed every game, player character is the cliche "chosen one" archetype, etc. I realize that it's too late to go back now, but the first two gens (especially Gen 1) allowed the player to maintain more of a suspension of disbelief. I guess you could say the mystical magical stuff started in Gen 2 with Ho-oh and the legendary beasts, but that wasn't the main plot behind the game. That was more of an in-universe folk tale thrown in to give the world a sense of history. Maybe some people like the fantasy side of Pokemon, but I think Pokemon was special because kids could pretend like Pokemon might actually exist in our world hiding in the grass somewhere. I dunno. That's just my nostalgia talking.

Honestly I wouldn't mind a new game set in Kanto so long as it wasn't just a straight remake. Throw in some Kanto variants for Unova and Kalos Pokemon.

I grew up on Gen II and as much as I like nostalgia, those games didn't age well at all.

-They move slow as fuck
-Dragon types are overpowered an rape everything
-the movepools of the pokemon were shitty and non existant
-the overall available pokemon is small
-there are a huge chunk of pokemon missing evolutions (like sneasel and gligar)
-there is no physical/special split
-breeding and egg hatching is a nightmare and a complete crap-shoot

I have a really hard time bringing myself to play older pokemon games because there's just so much...missing. Hell, even Gen V seems primitive and severely lacking in a multitude of game-play mechanics.

and BTW there's a pretty big chance its going to be that.There is a lot at stake for these games being good, and what better way to attract older players that may have stopped playing pokemon than to pander to nostalgia. Hell, they'll probably pull a "Gen VI" and give us the kanto starters as starters.

Now that I think about it, how will they ever make another pokemon game NOT set in Alola, but allow you to catch alola mons? They'd have to allow you to go back to alola, am I right? It would be stupid if the Switch version takes place in Kanto and you can catch alolan diglet or some shit.

What would be cool is if the Switch version was a reversed Gen II....where you start out in Kanto and then go to Jhoto as the secondary region, and your final destination in the game is the peak of Mount Silver where you fight Zeraora.

I tend to agree, but Gen 1 is like my bread and butter. I can play it to this day, and I won't get bored with it. I don't typically go back and play older games (even non-Pokemon games), but Blue was my first Gameboy game as a kid. I played through the Gen 1 games dozens of times. The first game where I only did one playthrough was Crystal, because I didn't want to lose all the stuff I had on that game. I'm not a "Genwunner" by any means, but I like them because they're so simple, and they accomplish what they're supposed to be at their core. They're also fast, so you don't feel like you get bogged down as much. There are some games/regions where I couldn't imagine doing a second playthrough, because it would seem like such a chore slogging through the main quest.

The game considered the bike a special item and it itself is not that fast, and there's no feasibly way to move fast while in buildings. You can actually run out of space for items in your box and in order to change pokemon boxes you have to save the game every single time, and heaven forbid you fight a snorlax or chansey. It takes almost a full minute to completely deplete their health bar, and if a pokemon does a move like wrap and you're slow you're fucked because you can't trade off NOR can you attack, but they can continue to attack YOU. That is bullshit and I have no idea why I was okay with that when I first played the older games.years ago.
