Soundtrack? Aside from a few gems (That gorgeous VRoad theme), XY had probably the most boring soundtrack out of all of the main series games. There are tons of recycled songs, you get almost the same 3 tracks for the entirety of the routes in the region and no day-night variants.
Coming right after the gen with the best audio design (hell, you could even talk to npcs to add or take away instruments from the area music at leisure), Kalos was lackluster.

The storyline is a chore, the characters are surface level, team flare is the worst in the franchise, post game was absent. It really didnt make the most of its material

Gen 7 has the best characterization in the franchise, bar none. The move to full 3d made for some awesome environments too. I miss the puzzles of the first gens, but gen 7 is otherwise a bright spot after a long history of the franchise not meeting it's potential

I wonder how much longer it'll take for vp to take off the contrarian goggles

Stop pretending Pokemon isn't the single largest video game franchise in existence.

The truth is that every Pokemon gen has its pros and cons, and the "genwar fallacy" as a whole is based on different measurements of success. One person might measure a gen's success purely on their subjective opinions abut the Pokemon themselves, other on the quality of the metagame, ect.

i liked XY a lot but it just felt like a puzzle with pieces that didn't fit together. the graphics were bad, region was messy, "story" was shit

gen 7 is a huge improvement with just about everything.

the pokemon and customization was cool though

Please hold back your assumptions, anon. No one is trying to incite genwars here.

Gameplay, presentation, storyline... all of these things are subject to a degree of subjectivity. Let's not pretend that Gen VII doesn't have it's own set of problems, although I would agree many of them are exaggerated by /vp/; massive framerate drops, overabundance of cutscenes, ect. may be a bigger problem for some people than the issues you pointed out about Gen VI.

So to answer your question, if I were recommending a Pokemon game to someone I would first and foremost take into account their preferences instead of projecting my own- in all likelihood I would end up recommending anything before Gen VI to a new player before recommending either VI or VII.

Yes, but it is much more pronounced in SM because the narrative is so prominent. Kalos, while an underwhelming region, at least still had some actual level design in the form of places like Reflection cave, Frost cavern, Winding Woods, and a real evil team hideout and Victory Road.

As dumb as the friends in XY were at least they could be written off as annoyances. In SM the entire point of the game is to listen to the badly written characters. Places where we should have had some dungeon content rob us of it to substitute it with dialogue instead, as are the cases with Ultra Space, the raid on Aether Paradise and others.

I don't want to defend XY because I was left dissatisfied as much as everyone else. But SM are still much worse, and I don't believe people are as loud about it because the games are current, but because the problems have only become worse.

Lana or Kiawe had more personality than every Gym Leader in XY put together (I don't even remember any of them except Korrina, and I beat the game twice), and even if you don't like Hau or Lillie, they're miles ahead of Calem/Serena and Shauna.

I'm not really one who plays Pokemon for the story, but at least SM gave us some interesting concepts whereas XY felt like a retreading of every other evil team+powerful legendary storyline.

Not sure how anyone could argue the characters were better in XY, not a single character stood out. I guess some people don't like too much characterization in their self-insert fantasy...

And lastly, you brought up post-game when SM is clearly more robust in terms of post-game content, although both are far weaker than their predecessor Gen V.

It certainly looks nice, but I don't get how it's unpopular. Maybe it's because of people that can't disassociate the setting from the gameplay and pace? Besides the awkward snow placement there's nothing that bad about it.

While it's an aesthetically pleasing design, its even more linear than Unova (a literal circle), half-assed Pokerides that were more of a chore than a feature, areas like the energy facilities that weren't accessible whatsoever... all in all a massive disappointment for the game's first 3D installment.

At least the story felt fully realized in Gen 7, even if it was sloppy in USUM.
The A-Z things ended up being the most interesting part of the story and it's barely explored. In ORAS Wallace even alludes to it, but nothing really comes of it.

That's true tho. The gameplay doesn't felt complete like the others, but same aspects were really good and innovative. Actually all the placements are messed up. I think the snow area was supposed to be a very very high mountain that you start to climb in Laverre City but it they made it VERY poorly done. Kalos Pokemon League being higher than Snowbelle City doesn't make ANY sense.

After trashing XY in this thread earlier, I'll admit it felt like a revival on its release and I'm trying to think through why that might have been

I think a lot of it has to do with pokemon designs, especially considering that gen 5 unleashed some of the least visually appealing pokemon in the franchise. I dont even mean the material pokemons like trubbish and vanillite, even other stables in the game run the gammit from forgetable to too ugly to forget. The starter line is in total the least appealing, the genie line is easily the ugliest trio of Pokemon to ever exist, durant is literally just an ant. Conkeledurr is a roiding muppet.
And sadly some of these mons were the new standard barrers of the meta game. Especially Conkles and Lando-T.
Gen 6 adapted pomemon design into 3d pretty well, and the quality control was much better now that they didn't try to pad out the whole game with new pokemon. Funny how greninja was developed for smash 4 before the games were even released when they could have chosen from all of gen 5, right?

Seasons didn't really add anything to the Gen V games, in my opinion. A month was too long a period for it to cycle between each of them, and I just ended up playing in Fall the entire time, so everything was just a hideous brown the whole way through the game. Plus, it could be a pain in the ass to look up where a TM you wanted is, only to find out that you can't get it for another three fucking months. I think it's less that they couldn't do seasons, and more that they just decided not to.

Yeah, there were a lot of Gen V designs that I didn't like until XY. While I don't really have an issue with most of the designs themselves, Gen V had a fucking awful color palette. Everything was ridiculously dark and over-saturated. The vast majority of Pokemon were mostly black with an overly intense, clashing second color. Haxorus is black and piss yellow. Drilbur is black and a dark blue that may as well just be more black. Scoliopede is black and bright magenta. To top it all off, the sprite rotation and zooming meant that they all looked like an ugly, blurry mess. I don't know what they were thinking. It was basically the complete opposite of Gen IV's clean, simple art style.

They weren't at all. Call me whatever you want, but replaying Gen 6 after Gen 7 made me realize how bad 7 is. Yeah, it looks better than 6, it fixed exp share somewhat and it has a challenging campaign, but all that is locked behind a dialogue heavy gameplay which consistently break your pace on a small region with no exploration, puzzles or properly dungeon, with an awful bottom screen interaction, and with no national dex. But the worst offender of all are the lagged menus, pc, and the online. Especially the online.

Replaying made me feel happy and have fun again. I was burned out of pokemon but now it feels like a fresh experience, just like how I felt playing XY for the first time. I'm training 12 pokemon with ease, the online is still active and players help each other with O-powers, you can train easily and faster too. It's just really good to play compared to what we got.

Had a lot of good mon designs though. And at the risk of sounding like an edgelord, the whole war and genocide plotline could have been really good if the story was just a bit more coherent. The Giant was a cool idea, but felt really tacked on.

The only thing I didn't enjoy was the friendsquad always showing up. Woulda been better if it had focused harder on the Calem/Serena rivalry instead and only had the other 3 show up as support now and then like they did with Team Flare towards the end. It was nice seeing other trainers advancing in their own adventure, but after a while they got grating.

The fact that XY didn't get a third version affected it a lot. People were expecting more customizations, E4 rematch, more postgame, maybe more megas, a story related on Zygarde, and new areas, but all that stuff was put into ORAS and Sun/Moon, taking away the last chances for Kalos to shine during its own gen.

That's false equivalence; obviously people are going to prefer the third version but in most cases the improvements made by them are not that vast, with BW2 being the exception.

Just because a hypothetical Z version could have improved on XY doesn't mean the criticisms against XY aren't valid, and given the complaints against USUM its fair to say Z wouldn't have had much impact on the perception of Gen 6.

Various weak points XY had came from gen V.
>Linear region
>Gym leaders and E4 with few Pokemon
>No more event items for Mythical Pokemon (besides Liberty Ticket)
>No Battle Frontier

Some problems Gen VI had, however, were the Exp. Share, the dumb evil organization, the fact that Megas were given mostly to already broken Pokemon, the lack of Pokemon in the region (Legendary Trio, some ordinary mons), but this has been going since older gens (Half of Johto and Sinnoh mons were just pre or evolved forms of already existing Pokemon. This also happened with Alola and regional variants) and most Unova mons are basically updated versions of many already existing mons.

The story was never important in the main series until BW and people now think it is essential for every Pokemon game while XY story is basically at Sinnoh's level.

I understand you're a sinnohfetus and to you the DS era is incredibly nostalgic but you have to realize to people who've actually played since the beginning the DS era was incredibly lackluster. Gen 4's awful slow-as-molasses engine alone is reason enough to call it the worst ever, and that's without getting into the host of other issues that plagued the generation.

I've never understood why people are so fixated on story in Pokemon games since 5.

Gen 1 and 2 were great without it, Gen 3 suffered for it, Gen 4 was light on it and Gen 5 was the only sincerely good attempt at it.

I would give anything for Gen 7 to give back player freedom and take away all these horrendous attempts at narrative. I fucking hate that the game is basically "babysit lille and the squad of retards"

Ultra SM also added a bunch of stuff to the original games. If you don't take third versions in consideration, most of the games feel really down. The only games that are arguably good without a special version (or remake) are Gold/Silver, Black/White, and X/Y for me. Kanto is really bad unless playing Fire Red or Leaf Green, Hoenn is good but feels really simple without considering Emerald or ORAS, Diamond and Pearl are almost unplayable with today's standards, and Sun and Moon get simply destroyed compared to Ultra SM.

Issues I have with XY:

-It doesn't feature memorable characters.
-It doesn't offer much of a challenge.
-The customization is limited for the male character.
-Too few new Pokémon.

Having said that, I enjoy playing them quite a lot. In fact, they are my favorite games.

I think it is the easiest of them all, but they aren't as bad as people say. They aren't excellent, but they are good games. The first two gens, and the second in particular, had a different nonverbal form of storytelling that was actually very well done. The second game has a darker vibe to it, some of team rockets schemes arent just wacky they're downright evil. Like selling slowpoke tails. But there are other forms of nonverbal storytelling too, like seeing the kanto gym leaders in the future. And good character moments too, like seeing the steel gym leader care for that amphorous, or having chucks wife tell you she thinks hes getting chubby. Small, but effective.
XY has character dialogue out the wazoo but npt a lot of that dialogue really tells about who those people are
Point is, gen 2 actually does do well on a more minimal amount of dialogue, and it has more memorable characters than some of the other games
