2: Johto came after 1. Kanto was fun, but I remember the sheer excitement of gen. 2. IS IT GOING TO HAPPEN? HAVE YOU HEARD OF PIKABLU? BERRIES? EGGS!? I try not to put a lot of weight on nostalgia, but gen 2 was... something really fucking special. We already LOVED gen 1 and gen 2 was NEW and it was still uncertain. No one knew if they were going to make a sequel or not. Anything that came after just didn't have that magic.
3: I didn't like gen 3 very much when it came out, but looking back on it now? It was a well rounded gen. new graphics, an actual story with actual characters- it was different from gen 1 and gen 2- a new atmosphere. It was... different, but that gives it charm.
5: Gen 5 was good. I actually enjoyed it, but it was very slow. It was way too streamlined, and they tried to FORCE us to go at their pace and I hated that. Also, my brother mentioned how the backsprites are artificially pixilated and since then I haven't been able to stop noticing it. That was a stupid, unnecessary bid at nostalgia that ruins the overall score.
6: Strange. Six is a weird gen because it's such a huge departure from what pokemon used to be. Obviously the graphics, but also the difficulty. ORAS was very much a better remake than HGSS, but Kalos felt... short. Small. The adventure wasn't there. Kalos especially introduced customization, which was fun, but ultimately that's just aesthetics, not gameplay.
