Shameless repost from the last thread. It's still WIP, but I want to get some critique before I move on too far. In case it isn't clear, the middle part is a lake at the foot of a mountain. The mountain cave is going to lead back to Daybreak Village as a shortcut for before you get fly. You're going to need a voucher to get on the island at the bottom that you'll need to get from the lake area. I'm contemplating having your mom call you and say she got you a voucher and to go back to the first town so that you'd have incentive to use the shortcut.

Let me know what you guys think.

I'm also probably going to stop posting so frequently here and make a tumblr. Just throwing that out there.

Have some event like a landslide that prevents you from going back the normal way and do some story stuff on the shortcut the player is now forced to take. That way it's more memorable and doesn't feel like an after thought.
I'm not sure what kind of enemy team you have planned, but the lake/cave in the center of the map is a really good location for something big to happen before going on to the second half.

A cave that large and central to the region should be like Dark Cave or Mt. Coronet, i.e. at least three entrances. How about if the route east of Glint City connects to the cave as well? Or to the new town that's right after Glint City. Could use a ledge if you want access to be one-way.

The bridge to Gym 3 is long enough that running up/down it will look monotonous with just those bricks. Could add lampposts every few rows, or spots here and there with darker bricks, or something.

You have a lot of subtle overworld improvements, like the stairs on the top cliff edge, using park and forest tiles outdoors, stacking cliffs in a more Gen 3 way, etc. One more thing I think would improve the far-eastern route is a plain grass block with scattered tufts of tall grass. Assuming that level of wilderness is what you're going for.

Mom's phone call sounds like a good idea, especially if there's more to do back at home than just pick up the voucher. (Would the player have gotten Surf at that point, so they can now explore the southern bay?)

The southern route that Gym 3 connects to looks like a great seaside location. Reminds me of some of Kalos' routes. Looking forward to hearing your music for it!

I thinks it's pretty neat, and also have an idea you could be able to incorporate if you wished to. To incentivate backtracking and to get rid of the map grid system in a way, maybe you could incorporate whirlpools or a different new hm into the rivers? This way the map feels more real/full, and the game feels fresher and innovative in a way, resembling 2D zelda maps. Also, following the same idea of gridless map, maybe you could expand the map into the north after getting the waterfall HM?

That mountain isn't going to be as central to the region as it appears in that picture. The plan right now is to have the region shaped like pic related. The picture is obviously really crude and not to scale or anything, but the mountain is going to be moreso in the upper left of the region than in the center.
Also, I don't plan for the player to get surf until about the halfway point. They're going to surf from Sunset Bay to the second half of the region.

I already plan to have the snow area a bit further on in the region. I'm also not planning to have the Waterfall HM. That might change in the future, though.
I was thinking about not having those blocks in the river at all. The only thing keeping you from going down river is not having Surf.

That looks like a solid map, will there be a "surfable" route towards gym 5? Kind of how you have to reach oldale town by boat at first, but then you are free to surf through route 105 in Hoenn.

Fuck, I have a netbook (remember those?) from 2008 or so that handles newer versions of VBA flawlessly, and it was like $200 new ten years ago.

That's an issue that RPG Maker XP carries because it's a really outdated engine.

If you're going to do a snow area right next to a grassy town, I would definitely make sure to pay attention to making the transition properly. Maybe something along the lines of rocky/mountainous routes->mountain (which would be snowing on the exterior)->snow routes->comfy snow town.

X/Y threw snowy towns next to grassy/temperate ones and it totally killed any atmosphere and just overall didn't make any sense.

Anyways, excellent job on the hack. Finished the alpha and it felt like a Pokemon game pretty much throughout. Only constructive crit would be maybe to add some more sidequests in the future + revamp Pikipek's sprite, which wasnt really up to the standard of the other sprites in a game. Keep up the good work though.

I don't mind you posting here frequently either because it's probably one of the things keeping /heg/ alive

How do you make caves and surfing areas more tolerable?
I believe most people hate them because, unlike open areas where players can try to avoid tall grass, encounters in these areas are everywhere.

What's a good team replacement for Eternal X? I wanna use Delibird but he's only available ingame
Golurk is awful because it's so slow and doesn't have the defenses to back up it's speed, and my team isn't suited for a trick room team, and even though he said he buffed him, Emolga still sucks and gets owned by absolutely every opponent in this game.
My Beedrill is also getting one shotted by everything.

That picture I posted as a really rough mock-up. There is going to be more space between where the actual map ends and the snow area than there appears. I plan to have the player go through a forest that serves as the spooky area with the trees dying as the player gets further in showing that it is getting colder and less temperate, followed by a town and a few routes that transition from cold but still green to a more snowy aesthetic.

Also, I'll keep posting here if people want. I just figured that the over-representation of one hack was turning some people off of the thread. At times this thread can turn into Coral General, and that doesn't seem fair to others making things. I figured I could take my updates to somewhere dedicated to my game and let those interested follow me there. Idk. Let me know.

Alright /heg/, if you are playing a fangame with custom music, what are you expecting?

Authentic Gen 4 / 5-style music or more modern interpretations of Pokémon music? Something in the Style of Gen 6 / 7? I need your opinions here. Because, yes, it depends on the artstyle, but some games that graphically look like Gen 5 are going for Gen 6 style music. So I'm wondering if that's a smart move?

Whatever the gen looks you're going for. If you're making a Gen 3 game, I'd rather hear those trumpets. Personally I think Gen 6+ "modern" music simply sounds like bareback ass and is very unfitting in a 2D game.

I mean, it depends. If you have a good musician, it can sounds good. Most fangames have incredibly generic low-risk music. Only unique OST I can think of right now is Ethereal Gates, which is actually recorded live.

Game Freak already figured that out and they made the glorious item known as Repel. Just supply the player with Repel before a cave otherwise if it's late in the game and you give them shops to buy Repel and they just ignore it then it's their own stupidity making things harder.

That one in particular uses the 'Clouds' filter.
A split gradient is applied on an upper layer, either with Multiply or Overlay blending mode, and a simple image of white dots is applied on top of that to simulate stars.

Which legendary are you using as the game's focus, assuming that's the route you're taking? What is the team going to be doing?
Try basing the name off of either of those things.

Or you could make it contrast with the naming scheme of your towns. Whereas the towns are named after times of day and such, the team could be night themed. Team Luna, Team Eclipse, Team Blackout, Team Zenith, Team Umbra, etc.

That sounds really annoying. If you see their mon, why wouldn't your dex register it as seen? It's just taunting the player with something they clearly could have had, even just by trading.

Twitch Plays Pokémon Anniversary Crystal does everything but the box thing, and there's no hack that makes boxes more convenient in Gen 2. TPPAC does ask you if you want to switch as soon as your box gets full, at least, so you don't have to backtrack in the middle of a dungeon.

I worked with some c++ GUI, and it's really a toss up.
Java is quick, easy, and does everything I could want to do.
GUIs in C++ have a steep learning curve, but can probably operate on a lower level than Java.
I would ever need to, though.

I'm probably in the minority here but honestly I'd be fine if fangame creators just used ingame music (or preferably remixes) as long as it's not stock shit or maybe even sprinkled in some music from other jRPGs.

When fangames try to make their own custom music, it ranges from bad to meh for me. Some fangames like Insurgence do have some aight custom tracks but then are overall bogged down by the shitty variety of the soundtrack

1. some of the high accompaniments do not translate well to simpler waveforms
2. the chord change from 0:22 - 0:25 is a little different I think
3. the original piece is supposed to evoke a sense of sunshine through rain. in the part with the alternating bass in the dotted rhythm you are suposed to pull back not get louder - this part conveys the puddles and the drops of rain as the clouds and winds move above. this is a really challenging piece to do with gsc instruments but it's important because so much of the environment comes from the mood of the music.

What are people's thoughts on raising the level cap above 100?

I'm making my region right now and haven't really planned out the trainers and teams, but I do want to try something different, maybe have ingame trainers go up to 100 and then maybe a little beyond it, say 125 for postgame.

I found out that totems do actually have EVs, so now I need to replay UM again to try out a few different spreads for them. Bit of a setback but it's good to know.
