Think about this: the gameplay is, lonely judging by Gamefreaks perspective on difficulty and the combat system now thanks to Ohmori, Masuda and the Ultra Guy having the lead on them all, going to stay as mediocre as it is, sadly. It's a JRPG with a lot of removed elements which makes RPG combat great, it's basically rock, paper, scizors and grinding that doesn't feel rewarding in any way. The "strong" concept comes from the diversity in Pokemon and the amount of teambuilding this could allow with proper JRPG elements. But the switch allows for great worldbuilding and establishing characters. That is what Pokemon is great at. And that is likely going to always be thing that keeps the franchise going. I'm personally still here because I love the monster designs for the most part and secretly hoping they'll eventually change up the formula combat and feature wise.

Sure most of that is unrewarding as hell when you look at it objectively but you can't deny that there's always a bunch of little shit to do, even if you haven't found out yet.
