Except, the older demographic doesn't, never has, and never will, matter to the anime, or even the franchise as a whole.
The so-called "hardcore" fans don't buy merchandise; all they buy is games. This series makes more money from merchandise and the anime that advertises said merchandise than it does from the games they're based on.
This is how it's been since the series began and it's never going to change; it's been a successful formula for over 20 years now.
