Both. After spending so many years playing Pokemon games, it's reached the point where we're burnt out of doing the same ol same ol thing, but if they try to change things up, we throw a fit about them not sticking to the roots of what makes Pokemon games good.

Wrong because game freak can't deliver on the form end either. The games are terrible on both fronts because GF is a shit incompetent company and developer that has literally never made a good game and the franchise is carried purely by it's concept and character designs.

Honestly can't really tell.
For one, a vast improvement in SM is the ability to breed competitive ready Pokémon is much easier. But then again, /vp/ is filled with degenerate injectors. But I just abosolutely hated the shit corridors and linearity of the game. Gyms were way better than trials, which feel like bootleg gyms. The world doesn't feel alive either, so small npc houses to go into, and barely any towns. I also don't like the Hawaiian theme they have.

people hate gen 7 and love gen 5 in this board and yet the biggest problem people cite in gen 7 is something gen 5 does almost just as bad.

I’ve been legally an adult since gen 4 and really an adult since 5. Platinum and BW2 were some of the better games of the franchise. I like ORAS over RSE. Gen 7 has been a letdown, even though the games were better than XY. I guess my point is that the series goes through peaks and troughs and we’re in a trough right now.

Gen 5 was story heavy, but most of the story was delivered through text boxes you could a mash through. Gen 5 also had better level design with Chargestone Cave, Desert Ruins, and the best Victory Road. The post game routes weren't bad either. However, gen 5 fans tend to give praise to BW2 instead of BW which improved exploration and difficulty while cutting down on the story which goes to show you, Pokemon fans have never liked emphasis on story over gameplay and especially to the overwhelming amount that SM has.

This. No one gives a shit about plot in Pokémon. Red/Blue didn't create a world wide phenomenon by giving us contrived story beats and excessive dialog. That's what the anime is for. Pokémon is for adventure while building your own team that reflects you as a player/ person. Sun and Moon is proof Gamefreak can't write for shit even with all these years of experience creating jRPGs.

I'm 28. The "games" are worse now if only because there's less game. Less dungeons. More handholding. More forced hallways and exposition. It gets worse every new game. I can't take it. I dropped Ultra Sun HARD. I have better things to do.

The only thing that could put a scratch on gen 5 being 10/10 imo is that I spoiled the 120+ mons for myself by checking serebii. Thank god pokemon wised up and made the releases worldwide for now on. Now we just need another actual decent gen

Both. Passion for games is decreasing as you notice the games are getting relatively easy in comparison to, for example, gen III and IV, because people currently prefers quick fun instead grinding around. And I can't blame them.
