Maybe not "middle-stagers" but pretty much every unevolved Hoenn Pokemon was either really fucking terrible or really fucking forgettable

That said I like virtually every single evolved Pokemon from that generation.

I feel like Gen IV was the worst about that overall, especially with middles. Look at Staravia, Grotle, even Gabite, when compared to their prevos and evos.
This fucking thing is probably the single worst middle-stage in the franchise. I honestly hope they don't make anything worse.

Yeah I don't like A-Golem. Same reason I don't like A-Dugtrio. Sure they look kinda' amusing, but they're too forced in how they look different to the normal ones. Doesn't fit very well with the regional difference lore they tried to go with. I'm even fine with gay pride Muk.

dugtrio is great both in flavor and humor, the only problems are its stats and the fact that it wasn't ground/rock (volcanic glass hairs) or ground/fire (VOLCANIC glass hairs).

I was going to say almost all middle stages look like trash (the notable exceptions being middle stages that were once final states -- Porygon-2, Rhydon, Chansey, etc.), but as it turns out, that's really only true for starters. Things like Dragonair, Kadabra, Haunter, Boldore, Gurdurr, Charjabug, etc. all look fine, (and some even look better than their final stages), but starters overwhelmingly have hideous, awkward middle stages: Wartortle, Croconaw, Combusken, Marshtomp, Prinplup, Pignite, Quilladin, Dartrix, Torracat, Brionne, etc. About half of the starter lines have absolutely repulsive middle-stages. What's the deal with that?
