Most of XY's soundtrack feels really dull and low-quality, and a lot of Gen 7's soundtrack doesn't really do it for me either.
The only tracks I really liked from Gen 7 were the Team Skull and Rainbow Rocket themes.

Why is the quality of SM/USM's soundtrack so inconsistent? It feels as though for every good track there's a shit track to balance it out, which is pretty bad form for a Pokémon game.

And those that aren't exactly bland are unfitting, Diantha's theme is the worst offender. It's one of the few tracks I remember.

The only good tracks of the OST played during Looker's chapter.

Honestly the only thing that bothers me of SM/USUM OST is the lack of folk hawaiian music.

They are good but I have a hard time relating them to their respective towns. Snowbelle City sounds like a track that would play during the final sequence of anything, no wonder it played in PokeAni when someone leaves or dies.

Actually PokeAni barely used the tracks of XY in the places they were supposed to, not a single gym battle played the XY theme and the season kept reusing the BW OST. Really activates those almonds.

Both SM and USM's champion themes are only good for the first 12 seconds. SM's turns into slow plodding shit after that, and USM's would've been okay as a regular battle theme but it's totally unfitting for a champion fight.

USUM theme isn't a champion fight. It's a battle to decide who becomes the champion and being a remix of Hau's theme who has grown so much, being a kid your age that came for the same place, I would say it suits it.

People think it's unfitting because they think it's a champion battle when there isn't even one yet. I actually thought that playing title defense theme for Kukui was really underwhelming, guy deserved his own theme.

Title defense is YOUR boss battle theme, it's like what other hear when they come battle you. Fucking Japanese kid came out of nowhere, got blessed by the local deities, wrecked shit and became the lord of a foreigner land and now you have to battle him while a reorchestration of the region's anthem plays. I would say that's not only cool but also both sad and hilarious.

Maybe not from a story standpoint, but from a gameplay and narrative standpoint it is completely identical to a champion fight in every way, which is why everyone includes it. Same with Kukui and Battle at the Summit.

7 years later, and I still think this sounds really, really dumb.

Also, to broadly shit on the entire games' soundtrack, I think almost all of ORAS' soundtrack sounds like one of those bad fan remix that would annoy you on youtube while you're trying to look for the real thing. Every single track just has these obnoxious changes that I would have assumed anyone actually professionally remaking them for an official game wouldn't have made.

Off-hand I think the only track they didn't fuck up was the Regi-Trio fight theme

That theme should hae been Bianca's only. It doesn't suit Cheren at all.

Slateport City was good, Archie & Maxie theme was great too.

ORAS OST wasn't too bad, but just very underwhelming. Somehow with more tehcnology they made tracks that were inferior to the original.

Sometimes I feel like they should recruit Shinji Miyazaki to make the music for the remakes

I guess bike and surf were less noticeable because you were constantly switching maps. Gen 6 and 7 made maps wider and no need for so many loading screens + seamless entrance to some towns, so you are stuck with the terrible ride music for a while

Too bad Goldenrod, one of THE Gen 2 themes, got butchered with bouncy shit. The original one was so laid back and relaxing and they fucked it up big time. Then again, most of the FRLG music doesn't sound very good either, like the notes are wrong on some of the tracks or the GBA's soundfont not really being used as well as say Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

I don't think any of them sound bad, but I agree for a few of them they decided to be cheeky and removed a lot of the catchers and tried to go the synth route. It feels like they tried to go for something that screams "IT'S A REMIX GUYS!", instead of an updated version. It was really only Magma/Aqua, the Super Ancients, and Deoxys that it worked for. I think they should have taken some inspiration from the anime.

The peril one should have its trigger on yout LAST pokemon too, otherwise is there almost everytime, cutting out a really good theme. It was really nice but it could have been improved in many ways.
I really miss the excellent sound design Gen V had. Such a varied, rich OST and little awesome things like having musicians on streets for you to go and ask if they could shut the fuck up or start playing, making the BGM different, while still having night/day variants of each theme.
XY was perhaps the biggest downgrade in OST and sound planning/designing from one gen to another in all the main series imo.

In general, I'd say most of the HGSS's ost remakes were not as good as the originals. Many lacked that sense of intensity, or sounded downright dull in comparison. The Kanto leader theme is a perfect example.

The main melody is more subdued. It's the reason why the old music is more of an earworm. With restrictions you had to make sure the melody of the music is actually being conveyed, whereas now GF tries to put a more "orchestral" and full symphony but having so many elements to a song doesn't work well if it's representing contained, separate, and iconic areas. Such a thing would be more useful for an open world type game.
Or at least that's what a random anon on the internet with no knowledge of music theory thinks.
