Charizard was shit Gen1~5 and still easy to die in Gen6~7 and its two forms are still inferior to the grass pokemon Venusaur in viability.
And there are many better fire options.

The only reason why you still see it in competitive games is because it's a very popular trashmon.

Non-mega charizard is just so offensively shit.

I like it's design but I resent the amount of effort that has been put in to try and make it usable and it's STILL bad.

How many Pokémon would kill for the movepool of charizard? It has swords dance, dragon dance and belly drum. It gets all of non signature fire moves, both special and physical. It's got a wide variety of spread moves for doubles including heat wave, rock slide and earthquake as well as support moves like defog and tailwind. It has viable special and physical attacks for the 11+ types it's capable of attacking with at 60 BP+ (not including hidden power) whilst other starters have to make due with one or two viable non stab moves.

It is insulting that it's such a failure despite having every opportunity afforded to it.

Any Pokemon that was not good or used before mega evolution came and game freak dropped it are shit.

Examples of good: Latios, Latias, Swampert (decent staller), T-tar, Blaziken speed boost, Gyarados, Heracross

Examples of bad: Venusaur, Charizard, Manectric, Sceptile(shit movepool and stats not distributed right), The list goes on and on.

Mons that needed a boost: Beedrill, Absol, alakazam, Sableye, Lopunny

Both are hard to use because Stealth Rocks are 99% in every game.

Also both aren't really that great.

Charizard Y only worthnoting thing about is its ability which is useful for sun teams.

Charizard X typing makes it a good defensive and offensive pokemon but it's still isn't that dangerous especially without a dragon dance.

Giving Salamence a Mega was the worst thing they could have done to Megazard X.

Honestly instead of trying to push the mixed attacker thing on the Mega Charizard's they should put the boost in their speed stats. Especially Y. Who by all means LOOKS like it should be much faster.

That said, it seems like Gen 7 hasn't been very kind on Zard Y's wallbreaking power. It makes me wonder what its fate will be in Gen 8 when it comes to both Singles and Doubles format. Though if the statistics from the official Pokemon site are of any indication, Charizard is currently among the most used Pokemon within battle spot overall with emphasis on Zard Y.
