Not to change the existing ones. Variety musn't come from one franchise being schizophrenic, it must come from different francises differentiating themselves from each other.
Why do you think Mario is the biggest success in the video game industry and still huge after over 30 years? He's consistently good, people know what they are getting when they buy his games, and he doesn't alienate fans with dumb shifts in game direction, at least not in his core series.
If a Mario fan gets tried of platforming and wants story he doesn't ask Mario to suddenly start making visual novels, he looks for another franchise that offers that element of video games. And Pokémon shouldn't be one of them.
