While I mechanically dislike gen 1, I largely prefer gen 1's world design to later installments. Having to explore to progress, while not done amazingly well, made the game feel more like an adventure game rather than the story gauntlets they have turned into.
Having to earn an HM rather than having it handed to you when you needed it made it feel like an accomplishment, because you would suddenly get a key to several locks, thus giving HMs an actual purpose. Once they just turned into story progression checks they started to seem redundant and people rightfully hated on them.
I also think the Pokemon scarcety adds a certain flavour to the games. While I like that you can find a myriad of different Pokemons on every route in gen 6 and 7, I think having to hunt down specific pokemons to give you advantages in a gym you have problems with, again, makes the games feel like adventure games where you solve puzzles rather than just some RPGs with fun customisations.
That being said, gen 1 were pretty broken bugfests, and the combat mechanics were extremely barebones. I just miss that the games are adventure games.
