Considering that they named them "regional variants" and not specifically "Alola forms", we'll probably see more regional variants in Gen 8.

If Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (as well as other games) introduced new Regional Variations, then the Alola depicted in Sun and Moon wouldn't feel as unique and memorable anymore.
It is for this reason we opted to not add new Alola Forms, but rather expand upon Z-Moves with the Z-Power Ring and brand new Z-Crystals so your adventures in "Ultra Alola" would be "Ultra Special".

Ignoring the shitposting about GF they have been planning forms like this since gen 3 when they came up with the concept of Shellos/Gastrodon (the same Pokemon with different forms in different places) and finally introduced the flesh out version of it 4 gens later so it'll be around for a while.

I hope so.

Gen 2 i think has the most potential for variants to shine.

a few ideas i got.

Ice/Flying Noctowl (snowy owl)
Bug/Ground Ariados (trapdoor spider)
Fire/Fairy Ursaring (fire cause sun bear, fairy because of circus bears wearing tutus)
Ice/Fire Primeape or Ambipom (based on the Japanese macaque)
Ground/Poison Mantine (like most other stingray)
Water/Fire Octilley (because it already can learn flamethrower, just make it stab now)
Water/Steel Donphan
a long neck Girafarig like Exeggutor, not sure for typing though.

Difference is that Megas are always something that can be hard to balance.

Regional forms are easier to handle and solve a lot of the issue of the Pokedex growing bigger.

Considering they made a main series game take place in an alternate universe, the one cricumstance where having never before seen darwinian-esque evolution of a pokemon in a region would make sense, and introduced new ultra bests instead of alolan forms, we're stuck with nothing but Gen 1 pokemon Alolan forms. It's even worse than Gen 5 making counterparts to gen 1 pokemon like the Roggenrola and Timburr lines.
