Just as we got few megas and Alola forms that, well, worked for some Pokémon, selecting a few compatible mons for fusion would be enough.
That said, this is not happening either way. The reason GF came up with other gimmicks is to get away from what other franchises have gone tired of doing.
Besides, it doesn't fit Pokémon that well, since they are treated more like wild animals. Megas are just another level of evolution, Alola forms are environmental adaptations. Fusions are monstruosities and are reserved for very special cases.
