1. Gen V had a really decent story for Pokemon standards with fantastic climax and an actual sequel
2. Gen VII has an ilusion of being story heavy by having shitton of cutscenes that most of the time have nothing to do with an actual story. The main story is Liliie with Nebby and her boring ass dialogue for the entire game. The climax sucks and the "upgrade" game only made the story worse (!)

The thing is you dont need cutscenes every 5 seconds to have good story. Look at Platinum or ORAS which by the way is really underrated when it comes to its story. They get the job done without the feeling that you're watching a movie

To add on to this, a game that feels like you're watching a movie can be good, if you go all-in on that. Look at the Metal Gear Solid games, for example.

Pokemon is at its best when the story comes to you, when you are just playing through the game with the objective of getting the badges and the enemy team or plot relevant character and reveals part of the story every so often. Then eventually you get sucked into the middle of the conflict, finish it, then continue with the story.

Gen 6 and 7 tried WAY too hard to incorporate the two "quests" (stop team and collect badges) and it made the exploring of each route and area very annoying because everywhere you go, two or more characters that have nothing interesting will constantly talk to you and take you out of the "exploring" part of the game.

When you have a GOOD plot you can totally overlook how "intrusive" it is, but GF's idea of good plot is having THE worst archetype of waifu character being """"cute"""" and doing absolutely nothing for the sake of the plot and then ending on the worst anticlimactic way since their motto of "No Pokémon is bad" trivializes everything they do.

They created an utopia which is hideous since the key of success is drama and a near state of dystrophy, they don't and they won't, for fucks sake just Look at DQV or P3 (let alone any megaten mainline).

Because S/M tries to force you to like Lillie, and if you don't then everything falls apart. If I had true autonomy in the games, I would have done my absolute best to avoid Lillie and her troubles. It would have ruined the story, but I'd be able to explore with my mons. If the story and characters were better written though, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Anon, the game doesn't force you to go downstairs and go to professor Oak's lab either, you can just stay in your room and play video games. But continuing with the game still forces you to try and go out into the tall grass.

Most JRPGs are extremely linear and don't allow you to avoid the troubles of one of the main characters because the game is built around the hypothesis that you want to advance the plot. This is true for Pokémon and it's true for Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest or any other JRPG. None of those games allow you to just freely roam the world without advancing the plot.

Speaking in purely selfish terms, what I gain by going into the tall grass is my own personal Pokemon and the ability to travel the region. I gain nothing by following Lillie around because I'm not interested in her story. I'm interested in Alola. I want to see all the Pokemon that live there, build a team with them, and explore. If Lillie's story and character were more interesting, I'd gladly follow her around.

I'm fine with linear games. I'm playing through Final Fantasy Tactics at the moment and it's great. I don't mind the linearity because the story is actually interesting. That doesn't mean that Pokemon's story has to be the exact same as Tactics though. What I'm saying is that if GF wants to put more importance into the story and its characters, then they need to put more care into it.

I think it's more about the fact that JRPGs have changed significantly over the years, and Pokemon fans, by and large, play nothing else, or at best play a bunch of Western shit. The overlap of fans for Pokemon and most JRPGs is crazy small. Because of this, most Pokemon fans still expect old school JRPG stuff instead of the more modern approach.

Consider Dragon Quest specifically. In DQ7, you don't see a single monster until you've had, what, 3 hours of exposition? And you don't unlock classes (which is when the game really starts) until about 30 hours in.
Contrast this to the original Dragon Warrior/DQ, where the beginning of the game is:

And then it just boots you into the world and lets you stumble around. Nobody stops you at the edge of every town and tells you where to go. You can actually get lost and get fucked up in later dungeons just because you went the wrong way. But DQ7 literally just doesn't show you later islands until you can handle them.

This is the crux of the issue. Pokemon fans want the old school style, like "muh genwun", of setting up a basic plotline and then letting you go. But the fact is that the games, and JRPGs in general, haven't been like that in over a decade.

The problem is that Pokemon from the beginning has had a traditional structure of 'go to these 8 type specialists, defeat them as well as the evil team, then go beat the elite four'. It is nearly impossible to work that format into a good story, and the devs did not try anything different with SM.

GF should really focus on making more games like Colosseum/GoD or PMD, with more fluid campaigns, so as to allow for more fleshed out characters and plot while not relying on so many shitty cutscenes. The autists who forever hold onto tradition will cry but this series desperately needs to disconnect with its roots and join modern era RPGs.

DQ8 starts immediately with a battle because they knew they goofed up with DQ7, even then after the slog of a intro Q7 had the game just lets you go and solve each town troubles at your own pace like DQ has always done.

Every main pokemon has the same objective, catch pokemon and become the champion, if somethings come in the way of those objectives you'll start to hate it, and sure, if an evil team gets in the way of the gyms I won't care since I just have to beat them to get through, but if some unrelated character sends me to a completely unrelated town to rescue her pet when I could be beating the kahuna and going to the next island it starts to get boring. That's why I don't mind BW characters as much, since both Cheren and N have as the main goal get to the league so they will just help you move forward, anyway BW still has some dumb detours like saving munna, but Lillie's quest is completely unrelated to your main objectives.
