This. Also, it's not like it's a surprise, anon. They outright said they would delete inactive accounts from the beginning. If you weren't going to pay, you should have safely stored them on a game and not in the bank.

You can load your RBY save file from your cart to the computer, take your mons, inject them into a VC copy of RBY (or inject your whole save file), and then transfer them.

Thus I have a download version of US and cartridge of UM, the latter of which to store my living dex once completed. Bank is simply used as overflow for things I do not need (like 100+ pichu)

Doing some quick calculations, assuming:
-Every individual Pokémon is exactly 1KB (they're all sub 300 bytes from what I can tell but let's go with high)
-Every individual copy sold corresponds to one player paying for bank
-Every player completely fills up their 3000 bank slots
1000 x 3000 x 47160000 = 141.48 terabytes of storage space
Of course, this is insanely unreasonable and the real numbers are probably not even a quarter of this, but I wouldn't put it past them to assume they actually DO need this much space.

Only time mons go in the bank is when I'm moving them from one game to the next as I'm playing.
