Even if you DID have friends, you still needed to get another copy of the game yourself or buy Stadium because they wouldn't dare give up their Starter, Fossil, Eeveelution or Hitmon for even a second out of the fear that you'd backstab them as many a child have been known to do for the sake of a digital diploma.
Then you had to factor in Version Exclusives, Stone Evolutions, making sure you don't fuck up your Five Moon Stones Per Game, Trade-to-Evolves, the retardedly rare and hard to get Safari Zone Encounters, 1% Encounters in general, and Legendaries.
All of that shit was just asinine for a child to accomplish without a Guide, and even then you'd need to exploit glitches if you wanted it to be reasonable, like using Cinnabar Coast to catch Safari Zone Pokemon or the Fly Glitch to force an encounter with any of the aforementioned pains in the ass to acquire.
