Actually, just design everything with multiple people and listen to their ideas and input. Your ideas might be good, but they also might be crap and you need people to tell you, "no" sometimes.
Don't add any custom typing, it's always terrible.
Read up on what makes a character good and well-written. People will be interested in your story if you have moderately compelling characters even if your basic plot is subpar.
Listen to criticism and don't be too attached to ideas. You need to be flexible.
Regardless of what /vp/ says, you don't have to add fairy type/ update move stats/ update move pools/ add any new mechanics you don't want to. You can stick with whatever base mechanics exist in the base game.
