I remember my elementary school library got Ruby/Sapphire bookmarks that featured the starters and the box Legends. I swear some people were arguing whether Torchic and Mudkip turned into Groudon and Kyogre and Treecko was just there. If Fug could have fit, that’d be the best bookmark to have as a kid.

Yeah that´s why the sprite during gen 4 was also orange blue and the overworld sprite was red blue.

The back sprite is probably how salemence should have looked if GF wouldn´t make their mons more toy friendly.

The switch to the GBA (the "whuddya mean anudder game boy, timmy?! u already have one!" effect was strong, as gen 1 and 2 with the exception of Crystal could be played on any Game Boy model) and the anime going to shit in Johto affected it as well, but the blatant steps backwards that gen 3 made really soured the goodwill of the fans at the time.

Uh-huh. That’s why Pokemon died after gen 3, right? No units ever sold, nobody likes Emerald and FrLg, etc. Pokemon sales have been remarkably consistent ever since gen 3, implying that most people didn’t care once the fad followers dropped off. Masuda’s commented on this as well.

Read discussions from around 2003. RSE were bashed as badly as ORAS and USUM if not worse for how they discarded huge parts of what made GSC so beloved such as day and night, going to past regions and being to catch them all with just two games. FRLG reassuring fans the old Pokemon would come back helped a bit, but gen 3 still chased off a sizable chunk of the fanbase that didn't get made up for until a new generation of kids picked up gen 4, making gen 3 a pretty awkward era for the series.

Ruby/Sapphire are still among the best selling GBA games, and only sold slightly less than most other versions. I don't know why people act like Gen III wasn't still insanely popular even when it first came out.

Most of my friends dropped Pokemon around the same time for the reasons you just stated. I'm a hopeless bastard though so it just made me more excited when Colosseum and the ability to transfer old Pokemon was announced.
