USUM would be amazing if SM didn't exist. If you played SM, you could honestly skip USUM without missing too much. Alternately, if GF put effort into their game the first time around, Alola wouldn't be so controversial.

Not really. Ultra is an okay product but there are numerous problems. For starters despite the couple of fights with the space albinos the game is largely unchanged up until the halfway point of the game. Meaning if you played the original games then for half the game you're doing the same shit with no extra freedom to account for the fact that you already know about this plot. The Necrozma stuff was nice. So is wormhole riding and Mantine surfing. I just wish there was more to it. Really could this not be a sequel a la BW2 so then things didn't feel so samey? I think the biggest disappointment was getting to the Ultra Megaopolis. Remember that thing GF hyped up during the marketing only to get there and find out the albinos entire city consists of a hallway and a set of stairs? That said the Ultra Necrozma fight itself was great. Aaaand then things go right back to being the same shit from the first game. Well I'll be fair the Totem Ribombee fight was good if not some bullshit. The Team Rocket special was...okay. I just wish there was more to it than just nostalgia. The Rocket castle was basically Silph Tower and the Celadon casino again with a boss at the end of each hallway that went away as soon as they lost.

All in all USUM is a 7/10. An okay product that's diminished if you played the original games first. Also the Battle Tree is still some bullshit.

I agree with this. Good game on its own, absolutely unjustified as a year later update to the first. Especially in the age of DLC it is the most unnecessary Pokemon game ever made.

I avoided this shithole as soon as I heard about USUM to avoid all spoilers. I didn't do that for any game since B2W2. As a result I'm finding the variety of pokemon available to be quite a pleasant surprise and it's not literally the exact same game as SM. Getting blindsided by new totems and every single random encounter not being an unending war of attrition is refreshing. Aside from Rotom not shutting up they're solid games and what SM should have been.

Yellow had GBC support, updated sprites and Pikachu following you the whole game. Ultra S&M on the other hand is 90% indistinguishable. I don't even mean that in a general sense, I mean the casual player literally wouldn't even be able to distinguish whether it's the Ultra version. The biggest change is probably the battle music and the stickers scattered around the region.

They added a few new sidequests but it so easily could've been DLC it's insane.

Adding new pokemon or new forms means that they need to replace the entire pokemon database, which is almost 2GB on its own. That's counting models, animations, textures, cries, and movesets. Then you have to replace the entire overworld texture database to add new locations. Same for new characters and music.

It's the exact reason why they didn't add ORAS megas to XY. Gamefreak didn't into modular databases because they have zero intention of doing any kind of DLC besides on-disk.
