Rocky was fun to use but it would've been better if it had a metal coat attached so we could get Steelix. Also the player is definitely in the wrong, Onix sucks.

Considering you can catch an onix without a shitty nickname attached right after falkner, the trade is shit. And you dont even need onix for falkner as you can easily get a geodude or mareep to kick his ass with.

If you're looking for a Rock/Ground type for wrecking early Johto, Geodude is clearly the superior choice.

Geodude is more useful to raise in GSC since you can breed EQ and Selfdestruct onto Sudowoodo, then breed EQ and Rock Slide onto Onix. You need to trade from RBY to get stuff like Explosion and Body Slam onto Steelix, though.

I don't think you can get Mareep before Falkner (barring those bonus eggs in HGSS), because the miracleseed faggot blocks the grass until you have a badge
