SMT/Persona is a pretty vanilla suggestion.
Also, Monster Racer. It plays differently compared to Pokemon (because, you know, monster racing), but the monster collecting is somewhat similar.

All things considered, if it weren't for Sun and Moon I would still hold Pokémon Games above Digimon Games. I have yet to play a Digimon Game that disappointed me, Sun and Moon did. Besides, how can you call Digimon a dead franchise?, it released a new Anime Series this year plus it has a new game coming out beginning of next year, hardly constitutes as being dead.

Why are they shitty if you don't mind me asking?
I agree that the old games were pretty shoddy compared to other's but the games name are much more linear, at least better then what they were.
The Anime was actually pretty big when it was first done in the early 2000's, not as big as Pokémon but still widely known. Nowdays the Anime has lost a lot of traction, but I blame Data Squad for that (Xwars wasn't much better either)
I can sort of agree that it's deffinintley seen better days, but it still has kept up with some pretty entertaining games and the new Anime focusing around the original Digidestand but older is quiet an interesting spin (at the very least they don't seem stuck at being permanently 10 years old, one of my few gripes with the Pokémon Anime)

Anyways to answer the OP's question, if he wants a 3DS title I'd recomend a mystery dungeon game or Conquest if he hasnt gotten into it yet and wants a pokemon fix. Havent played enough PMD to make a recomendation though.

You ride monsters and you can raid a monster's nest to get different monsters. Sometimes the monsters are rare or stronger than others. The plot is kinda cliche and Cheron is literally Sasuke but it's a lot of fun.
