Venusaur has great stats, great ability (Chlorophyll), great Mega evolution all together make it a pretty great tank pokemon able to run different sets and deals damage and take damage pretty well.

Blaziken got Speed Boost ability which made into Ubers ever since.

>Greninja
Has one of the best abilities in the series, Protean. It's Ash's Greninja forme is also pretty good.

Basically, all three have great abilities bundled with great movepools and stats.

Venusaur has always been bro tier for me. Blazikens design is okay, I used it in my original Ruby run and it was great.

Greninja I was a little bit disappointed in after seeing Frogadier first. I like what they attempted but it's so jagged and weird looking to me. Really hoped that with the bubble scarf thing they had going it would turn into a bearded tanky water poison Mon. It is good though.

Meganium only ever set up screens in the lowest of tiers. Typhlosions only niche is being a somewhat speedy eruption user.

Feraligatr used to be shit but they gave it DD and, most importantly, sheer force to abuse life orb.

Empoleon and Infernape are extremely close and are really good in UU. Infernape just edges it out though. Torterra is RU at best. Too slow and not enough bulk to balance it out along with a 4X weakness to Ice

Torterra doesn't have a place in the upper meta. Just write outclassed on its face.

Empoleon just tends to pop up alot online for me but it was better in earlier gens. Given bulky water types traditional role of halting fighting and ground physical attackers being weak to both hurts it and it's not like it's got toxapex defenses.

It's ok but I always thought it was a shame it got Defiant instead of Competitive.

He has a way better move pool than blaziken could ever hope to have, giving him coverage against almost anything that counters him. I don't like Infernape too much though, seems like a lazy rendition of Blaze like you said.

Forgot to add that the inclusion of fairy types was an obvious boon to Empoleon and a slight boost for infernape (as a fighting type not weak to fairy) but again, Blaziken makes better use of it.

I play doubles mainly and have a fake out infernape I like using as a lead alongside setup. Focus sash and fake out mean even if it gets targeted it can fire off a blaze boosted flare blitz.

Yeah they're not great, the best starters are the Gen I & II Mons who've received a ton of love in recent generations.

As far as competitive viability I'd probably rank 5-7 as:

absolutely garbage stats. 75 in both attack stats and pure grass is horrible defensively. But Serperior gets Contrary which along with Leaf Storm is possibly the best ability in the game. Giving him plus 2 stages in special attack every time he used it

Incineroar is already a decent pick in Doubles that will only get infinitely better with Intimidate and Primarina is arguably the best non-Hidden Ability starter of them all for Singles.

dude it's single player pokemon. you can use whatever you want. More difficulty is just better anyway. Emboar is fun to use. Bulky (not tanky, he has a lot of hp but literally no defenses) as shit and has the highest attack out of any starter

Take this with a pinch of salt.

Basically Contrary means Serperior gets +2 SpA per Leaf storm instead of -2.

It can be fairly powerful but is resisted by a ton of common competitive Pokémon ( and this has only gotten worse with hug boosts for poison etc recently). It doesn't get ingrain so it can't stop itself being phased.

AND BELIEVE ME, if it had ingrain it would be using it as It also has amongst the worst, if not the worst, attacking movepools of the starters.

The problem with the logic behind "if they didn't have megas" is that it doesn't factor how the meta would change without megas.

If you're analysing how good they would be without their own mega forms in the current meta then you have to analyse how good they'd be if there were no megas or its skewed.

There is a ton of shit in the BL, UU and RU tiers that would rise of megas weren't a thing.

Chlorophyll Venusaur has a role of putting everything to sleep then sweep away or stall as a tank.

Contrary Serperior has a role to just spam Leaf Storm to abuse its ability.

And when something walls Serperior pops up, Serperior and its ability will be useless.

Just to support this there are currently 16 of the 48 Mega forms in OU. If those Pokémon all didn't have their megas everything would change drastically and the starters who used to be ok will rise back up in viability.

Contrary leaf storm is an extremely strong boosting method but it is still a Pokémon with a great many drawbacks.
