I would reccomend you get SMT 4 for 3ds. and if you like your experience with it then branch out and find out what to do next. I could recommend more but it ultimately depends on whether or not you will like the game. Also I highly recommend you do not start with persona.

I'm a Pokemon fan who enjoyed the story/tone of SMT games enough from some LP's I watched to give them a try but couldn't get into the gameplay. SMT's 4 overworld map in particular made me drop it but I'm glad the series exists.

Love Devil Survivor though. I should buy Break record someday.

Yeah I feel like this. Pokemon peaked between 2009-2012 with GenV, Conquest, and Explorers of Sky.

Of course, SMT has its own problems. DeSu2 sucked, all of the 3DS remakes of SMT games are bad except for Soul Hackers, and the IV games are mostly trash. Plus Kaneko is missing.

While USUM isn't the best, I'd give it a solid 7/10 just because I enjoy the core gameplay, which others would probably consider a shit opinion, but who cares? What's the point of trying to make every other monster series Pokemon's bitch? You should be happy that it even has any sort of competition so the developers has to innovate so they don't get behind, a job they have done shittily, hence why the intended demographic is playing less and less and it sells based on its nostalgia.
