Ho-oh's tower was way better than Lugia's caves. Ho-oh also got completely cucked by being in the first episode because with the anime they are legally obligated to show each pokemon at least once so there was no need for ho-oh to get a movie while lugia still needed its airtime.

Also lugia's theme is ass, however it is better competitively than Ho-oh.

for comparison, Lugia is B+ and Ho-oh is A, pretty sure Ho-oh overtook lugia in ORAS

Dark and Ghost types became better this gen making it harder for Lugia to act as a wall. Even before then Ho-oh has a fairy resist and sacred fire is a amazing stab.

What fucking timeline are you living in? In BW2 (when they got HAs), Ho-oh was A rank and Lugia was only C+ rank in Uber.

Ho-Oh's design is fucking awesome... as long as it stays as a static 2D image. Seeing it like in pic related, with its wings spread and forming a circle shape and the multicoloured feathers fanning out nicely, its head tilted down from the heights with a mad gaze in its eyes, beak open screeching at the foolish mortals treading on its soil, talons extended and ready, and the tailfeathers spreading out from behind it like the sun's rays... everything about this design screams "awesome". But when you need to animate the thing in flight, you can't really sustain this pose forever without looking really silly, and god forbid you need to view it from another angle, because then it looks like just another run-off-the-mill ornate peacock-phoenix thingy.

The transition to 3D really hurt both of them. Ho-oh isn't as visually impressive, and Lugia's model highlights how awkward its hand wings and pot belly are.

I don't really agree in Lugia's case. The 3DS games' model and animation is bad, yes, but the problem is not simply the 3D transition; not only was Lugia's design made to be animated from the getgo since it was the star of the 2nd movie first and a gen 2 posterboy second, and polycount aside Lugia looked a lot better in Stadium 2/the GameCube titles.

The problem is that it isn't big enough on top of the fact that ALL the 3DS models have an extremely washed out color palette. Lugia is big. It's supposed to be big. This isn't big.

That's because Ho-Oh was originally the mascot for both Gold and Silver and Lugia was a last minute addition coded in because of the anime. It's the original Ash-Greninja, in a way.

Not him, but I know exactly what he's talking about. It's tied into the same reason Lugia is psychic type. They wanted to give it psychic type instead of water because psychic type = powerful Pokemon at that time, and they wanted it to appear powerful.

It really was a mon they just made for the movie and adapted into the games; even the typing was largely an afterthought.

Well its at least known that Lugia was designed with marketing purposes in mind.

Note the shit like not having claws on its feet, MUCH simpler to make toys and plushies of it and less complex to animate.

I have a similar feeling, I guess it's because Ho-Oh was the first Pokemon to be treated like a deity. Mewtwo is similar in strength but its lore is firmly sci-fi, Ho-Oh has its own tower and its own myths involving such things as granting eternal happiness and giving new life to the dead as even greater creatures than they were before, the beasts were regular pokemon before their ressurection. It was the first Pokemon the felt truly god-like.
