Yes, and it's retarded.
In a sprite you can assume it's in the middle of an action. In a model, it's just keeping its arm raised like that for no reason. What works in a sprite doesn't work in a moving model.

I wonder what determined whether a flyer got a gliding animation or a flapping animation. Gliding is one thing I can agree are bad about some 3D models, the flapping poses like Zapdos and Yveltal are great.

What works for a sprite doesn't work for a 3D model. Like has been stated, a sprite is mid-action.

Hitmontop standing on its head all the time in 3D would look dumb, as would Typhlosion standing there with its flames constantly lit.

No they aren't. They're only more accurate to the Sugimori art specifically. But they're less accurate to literally everything else.

It's "an" official artwork. It's not "the" official artwork. Everything in the anime and DW art is equally as official. Sugimori's style isn't the law for what Pokemon look like. It's just his style. And even HE isn't consistent with it sometimes.

Way to miss the entire point. Reference art is important because sprites have never EVER shown every aspect of a Pokemon's physiology. Without it artists wouldn't know how to draw certain Pokemon from certain angles.
