A huge chunk of that money came from the first 2 gens when Pokemon was at its peak in terms of popularity and recognition by normies
The only reason Game Freak is still around is because of the Pokemania boom from the franchise's earlier years. Hence the reason OP is referring to the franchise as a "zombie"

2017 was one of the best years the franchise has seen in terms of sales though

Game and merchandise sales were both through the roof this year (Lillie alone got four different figures released this year, with two more coming next year)

Even assuming you're correct (gonna need a source on those numbers by the way), the fact is in 21 years, Pokémon outsold a franchise going 40 years, one taken over by Disney to boot (they're kinda a big deal, when it comes to knowing how to utilise merch rights after all).
