Italy would be cool. It's got rich history and rich culture. I could see it being a comfy region because of Pokemon Heroes, which basically takes place in Venice. It's probably the best European region to base a Pokemon game off of.

I've been wanting one region set there forever, and for it to be our first full console game makes it even better

Venice especially, Alto Mare from Pokemon Heroes is one of my favorite locations in the Pokeworld, so seeing it finally represented in game would be a dream come true, and thats not even getting into the sheer potential of other locations

The Colosseum could be a new Battle Facility like Battle Royales
The Tuscany Fields could be a massive open plain area,
The Leaning Tower of Pisa could be a gym/trial that involves some tilted rooms

The Legendaries could be based on Roman Gods, We get one for each Olympian

Instead of gyms/island challenge, we go on "Hero Trials" where the leaders are inspired by the Heroes from Greek/Roman Mythology, and the challenges are based of their feats
(Like the Hercules guy has a Nemeanin Lion and the Theseus guy has a Minotaur and the Perseus guy has a Medussa)

So much potential

For Gen 7, they had trips to Spain, Southern France, Hawaii, California, etc. sparking all kinds of speculation on what the next games could be, like Z or XY2 or something new

It was only when the announcement trailer for SM dropped and people noticed hints like rainbow license plates and yellow firetrucks that people began to pay more attention to Hawaii, which ended up being the correct one

Italy is a bit less iconic than Spain when it comes to traditions and culture, but none the less would make a great region.

Being a pizzafag I can assure that the whole tradition vs innovation would fit amazingly well, since Italy basically lives on old traditions and constructions, like cathedrals or even entire cities

Italy has plenty of landscape variety but its long, thin shape is kinda awkward to adapt it into a pokemon region. Spain is probably a safer bet.

Consider that they never included a whole country into the regions they made. Unova is just the NYC urban area, they didn't even include the upstate. Kalos leaves out Occitania and Corsica, the first four regions together don't even make the whole of Japan. Alola is the closest you have if you consider US states as quasi-countries.
With that said, they can and will probably use only the North or the South of the country to circumvent the problem. It would make polentoni or terroni absurdly mad, but whatever. If the thread is still up later I might post maps with only the South or the North and discuss their merits as separate regions.

Having the legends be based of Roman Myths would be awesome

We could get a Mt Olympus like location in the sky or another dimension where all the legendaries would gather

There could be Sidequests exploring through Ruins and old temples to find TMs and move tutors and such

Rock Trial - Explore Underground ruins
Ice Trail - Climb the Alps
Water Trial - Navigate Venice
Psychic Trial - Inside Sistene Chapel
Fire Trial - Climb Mount Etna
Grass Trial - Explore Tuscany Fields
Dragon Trial - Gladiator match in the Colosseum

If it's truly based on Italy, I would love an area based on Circeo National Park.

That could even be the place for one legendary from a trio, maybe a waifumon based on Circe the witch.
Another one from the trio could be based on the legend of Partenope the siren, in Naples.
For the third one I have no clue, but I'm sure there there are other legends that could well fit the theme.
I don't like the existence of waifumon, but in this case I think it might work.
Maybe the three of them could be muses for music, art and poetry.

If the leak about the clash between traditions and innovations is true, the idea of a civilization based on an ancient empire would fit perfectly.

Maybe we'll get both represented,
Greek myths represent "Traditions" and Roman Myths represent "Innovations" so we'll get variants or forms between both of them, like a mon based of Hades is a ghost type, but his Pluto form is a Ground type
