Gamefreak has rode on the same base gameplay for years. This would be the first time they diverge from it in a big way. I don't think they are good enough developers to make it work. They can't even properly optimize their games in 3d.

The people complaining about the old battle system aren't wrong. Competitive Pokemon is a very low-skill game that's horribly unbalanced. I think the core system is workable, they just need to make the right changes.

>tone down the powercreep back to gen 3/4 levels
>more balanced type chart
>more diversity in strategy (e.g. more weather types, more status types, more victory types)

Going by recent history though, GF is more likely to just add more flashy nukes and call it innovation.

Before Gen 6 the meta was incredibly stall-based. GF claims they don't pay attention to the meta when they create new Pokemon, but I think Mega Evos and Z-moves were made so battles would go faster.
