Alder began a turning point in the way champion battle themes are composed. Previously, the champion music felt more like it was music for the position of champion, rather than the champion character itself, meaning it could be used for anyone.

You could take then Gen 2 champion theme for anyone and it'd fit the battle assuming they're actually the champion of Johto. Same goes for Gen 3, where Steven and Wallace actually share the same theme in their champion battles. However, now the champion themes are more personalized and in tune with the individual who happens to be champion rather than just being a champion theme. You couldn't take Iris or Diantha's themes and use them for someone like Lance or Steven, it would be very weird and unfitting, but the other way around it wouldn't be weird.

I don't want it to be like that. I want them to go back and make the champion music champion music, not character music.
