What I'm saying is that Johto was made shittier than it could have been thanks to Kanto's inclusion. Kanto should have been postgame and stayed there, but it stole some key things from Johto like all its dark type mons and its league, as well as general game memory that could have been put toward making Johto have more of its own identity.

I always thought the Kanto focus in SM was due to it coinciding with the 20th anniversary year. Especially the Alola forms.

Found it really weird that you got to choose between the Kanto starters during the main X/Y storyline though.

They had to do something for Zygarde since it had a new form in the anime long before the game came out

A Pokemon being good is not a reference to anything, it's a good Pokemon and improving features is what any other series would do

A single battle or a few lines is expected, red and blue weren't so bad when they showed other people like wally and cynthia there

The problem came with this

I have favorites from every gen, but what you youngfags need to come to terms with is that even the most mundane Gen 1 Pokemon like Diglett or Pidgey are infinitely more recognizable and popular to the general public than any Pokemon past 151 except maybe one or two movie legendaries like Lugia. You're like a Star Wars fan screeching about Yoda getting a cameo in the new movie rather than Mace Windu or Qui-Gon Jinn. The originals will always be more popular and marketable.

I'm 26, a lot of my mates don't even play games, much less Pokémon main series Pokémon titles, and they were losing their fucking shit over being able to go and catch a weedle. The Gen 1 Pokémon will always be the most iconic set because they are the first.

The simple fact is, that from a business perspective, this had been the Gen that Kanto references have made the most sense. The combination of Pokémon Go, the 20th anniversary celebrations and the I choose you movie, have brought Kanto Pokémon to the forefront of the franchise's wider appeal.

For me the designs look distinct enough. Still Masuda relied a little bit too much on the past and tried to reboot the franchise. Still Gen 5 is the magnus opum from GF.

Pokémon has been mentioned on actual news shows and was repeatedly mentioned in articles months after release. It brought Pokémon to global attention

Tajiri didn´t even touched crystal. But that´s true, they didn´t thought pokemon would be so huge. That´s why after gen 2 the anime just forgot about major plotlines (like ash´s hat) and all the characters.
That´s why GS had so much stuff and the last thing was a battle against red.

Still, it´s BW(2) that´s where Masuda tried to make things much more different and wanted to innovate it more. Still it backlashed thanks to the world map, thanks to autists who cried that they needed to use new mons.

I live in the UK and you can still get Pokémon stuff everywhere. Even comparably shitty chains like B&M and Poundland carry Easter eggs, figures, Christmas decorations etc. I could walk into Primark and come out with 30 different articles of Pokémon clothing.

In my experience, the normies were the ones eating it up. I stopped playing Go after a few months because it wasn't enough of a game for me. Whereas my casual mates who usually just played clash of clans on their phones loved it.

A friend who's an amateur DNB DJ was still playing a year after release despite COD zombies being the closest thing to a game he had played in years.

I'm not arguing that the results were what they hoped, or even that it yielded a good game as a result, just that at the time it made sense to include a load of Gen 1 Pokémon and references in SM.

Not only did it allow them to potentially captilize on people who played Pokémon as a child having a renewed interest in the franchise but it let them familiarise new players with Pokémon from before their time.

When you add having to create and design less new Pokémon as a result it's a theoretical win/win for GF. Again, not saying it worked. Just that it made sense at the time.

Masuda is the one who came up with natures. Before he did that, you could catch any Bellsprout you wished and only be 0-15 stat points off in a stat from any other Bellsprout. It truly felt like any Pokemon you caught was your partner.

Natures introduced the feeling that your Bellsprout was suddenly unusable if it had a minus special attack nature, etc., which also popularized breeding for perfection instead of just baby forms or egg moves.

TL;DR Maduda is responsible for Pokemon eugenics.

Nature's, abilities, the special stat split and the physical/special split of Gen IV, are some of the best things to happen to the series.

They added much needed depth; presented you with choices and the option to play your infernape as a special attacker or a physical attacker depending on how you wanted to use it.

If I were Game Freak I would completely get rid of IVs (which are downright infuriating).

Nature's are just an extension of that same flexibility. When so many Pokémon have mixed defenses or attacking stats the option to choose one over the other is extremely useful and another factor that has aided the popularity of its competitive play. It allows you to surprise your opponents Blissey because you're running Adamant or modest in your Sceptile. You can increase slowbros lesser special defense stat to round out its walling potential.

It's really frustrating catching lonely Smoochum or timid Muk but in game the negative effects are lessened because it's percentage based. Yes -10% attack is bad but when you don't have 31 IV and 252 ATK EV's the amount you lose is a lot less.

I think we gain more than we lose with nature's. IV's are a bit shitty though. It's a shame hidden powers are attached them as it's literally just this is better than this.

It didn't, though. Me and my friends spent many hundreds of hours on the first two generations. Back then, just getting to level 100 was a challenge, as was getting your hands on certain Pokemon like Scizor, Blissey, Tyranitar, Kingdra, etc. You just picked several of your favorites who were decently strong and went to town. If you were lucky, you had a way to constantly reset one game or another so you could teach Earthquake or Rock Slide to more than one Pokemon! We made do with less.

I fully support making things easier in Gen 5, 6 and 7, like infinite TMs, quicker breeding and leveling, etc., but if they left out natures specifically the gameplay would have actually reflected their mantra and philosophy for the games. I mean, natures are exactly why around Gen 3, the marketing promoting "friendship with Pokemon" started to sound even more utterly retarded than usual... Because they fucking designed a game where a wrong nature crippled your bro with a massive 10% difference in stats, so better discard his ass and breed a better one!

Unfortunately, since Pokemon Bank is a thing and all Pokemon use Gen 3 base data from now until eternity... How could they even go back, even if they were smart enough to do so? It's a bit of a double edged sword imo. The competitor applications of nature's are huge and it's an enormous book go competitive play as a whole. But I completely concede that from an story mode perspective it's a trash mechanic that, as you say, punish players who want to use the best version of their bro.

Not sure what they could do differently. No negative nature's would be too strong but losing them altogether would harm competitive.

IVs literally amount to a better Pokémon of the same species (with the exception of trick room pokemon). It's about time we had a means to fix the IV's of our ingame teams and the legendaries/event Pokémon.

Here, have this passive leveling island that takes real world weeks to get to 100, and you have to constantly come back to it every day to reset it or you are losing out on experience, etc.

a) IVs no longer have an effect on a Pokemon's stats (they only serve the purpose of determining its Hidden Power type)
